Book Description

12 May 2012
THE DESCENDANT is a technothriller set in the world of the international, best-selling series by M.G. Harris, THE JOSHUA FILES.

A standalone adventure, THE DESCENDANT is written for mature teens and adults. It is a companion-story, or prequel to THE JOSHUA FILES.

Molecular geneticist Jackson Bennett is stunned when the colleague he’s meeting at Mexico City airport is led away by the authorities. Now they're after him, too. On the run, Jackson discovers that he's been passed a mysterious test-tube containing the missing scientist's final, coded message.
With the help of archaeologist, Dr. Marie-Carmen Valencia, Jackson must now decipher the message and solve a puzzle which begins with an enigmatic DNA code and ends with a long-forgotten, ancient burial chamber in Iraq.
The two young scientists are drawn into a headlong race to unlock human powers so ancient that the memory of them exists only in the human genome, so world-changing that their owners could control the destiny of the earth.

Praise for THE JOSHUA FILES by the same author:
"Will keep you up all night to finish" San Jose Mercury News
"Satisfyingly twisty" Financial Times
"An absorbing read." The Australian

About the Author

About the Author M. G. HARRIS is the author of THE DESCENDANT - a technothriller, and the internationally best-selling young adult thrillers, THE JOSHUA FILES. She was born in Mexico City but lived most of her life in Manchester, England. She studied biochemistry at St Catherine's College and St Cross College, Oxford, and worked as a research scientist before setting up an IT company. MG began writing THE DESCENDANT - a technothriller - when a skiing accident left her with a broken leg and the time to write. 5.0 out of 5 stars History, Mystery and Catacumbal Conspiracy 20 May 2012
By Reuben
Format:Kindle Edition
This is an enjoyable read. The characters are colourful, credible and interesting. I was soon drawn into the plot and in fact had to download a Windows version of Kindle so that I could carry on reading when I should have been working! I liked the descriptions too - eg,"thin brown air" that "simmered". The structure of the novel contributes to its success, and the science is great fun even for those of us not versed in genetics. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast moving & fascinating 10 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a really fascinating sci-fi thriller by someone who clearly knows something about science and uses it to intrigue the reader with a lot of possibilities just fractionally into the sci-fi world without going too far. One never knows quite where the story is going next. I could hardly put it down and highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, left me wanting more 10 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book, my first experience of Harris, it has left me wanting more for sure.

The people and setting are rather believable, and even the fantastical elements are written in such away that you find it easy to buy into also. I got through it in no time, finding myself reading whenever I had a spare too minutes, out came the Kindle - Always a sign I'm enjoying a story when I read at every chance I get.

The ONE downfall of this book, and the reason it loses a star for me, is that I really did not like the main character/protagonist. He was well written, believable, easy to image as a real guy - I simply did NOT like/sympathise with him, he comes across as a bit of an... well, not a nice guy at all. I couldn't "root for" him, or wish him to succeed.

I'd still recommend this story to anyone who's a fan of the genre
