Stephen Bailey's fascinating guide to the Portway - an ancient prehistoric trackway in Derbyshire - has two aims, both of which are successfully achieved. 'The Derbyshire Portway' sets out to be both a pocket guide to this ancient route, substantial parts of which can still be followed on the ground; and to introduce the reader to its history.
As a walking guide it is concise and accurate, and augmented by simple-to-follow sketch maps (though I always like the comfort of the OS in my pocket).
In addition, each stretch of the walk is given its own brief chapter identifying points of historical interest, and constantly tempting the walker to stray from the straight and narrow in order to investigate Iron Age hill forts, Mediaeval churches, Roman remains and many other objects of interest calculated to delay one's journey.
The book benefits from a crisp historical introduction which sets the whole enterprise in context. Stephen Bailey does not unravel the mystery of the Portway, nor does he pretend that he (or anyone else) can do so. But he opens it to our scrutiny and in doing so not only presents us with a glimpse of a long forgotten 'main road', but provides a guide to 'an exhilarating journey with some specacular views' through ideal walking country.
