The magic of childhood

W.W. Denslow is best known as the illustrator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but his contribution to the realm of children's picture books is almost equally important. This collection includes the first 9 of his picture books, with a scholarly introduction by Michael Patrick Hearn. I hope Dover has sufficient success to continue to issue these until his whole ouevre is available. Highly recommended.

I agree with the first reviewer in that I hope Dover completes the other 9 stories. Denslow marked a turn in children's book illustration. Both he and Baum decided to take the moral lessons and dark edge out of children's story books and just create work that a kid could enjoy on his own. Denslow continued that philosophy with these collections of classic tales and softened them up a bit for the younger audience.
