Biography

Source: All Music Guide

The White Stripes formed on Bastille Day in 1997, aiming to create simple, vigorous rock & roll with little more than Meg White's percussion and Jack White's guitar-and-vocal attack. Meg's drumming was deliberate and straightforward, while Jack's formidable guitar skills paid homage to garage rock, blues, and punk. A former drummer for the ... 4.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent single from The White Stripes. 24 Nov 2005
Format:Audio CD
The Denial Twist is the third, and possibly last single from The White Stripe's lastest (and excellent) album, Get Behind Me Satan.

"The Denial Twist" is a great uptempo song with Jack White on piano rather than guitar, Meg drumming as energetically as ever and even some tambourine. It is a really catchy song that might not perhaps be as interesting or complex as some of their songs, but is certainly enjoyable to listen to and has some great lyrics.

The b-side is a cover of "Shelter of Your Arms", which I think was performed originally by Paul Simon but has been covered by others since then. However The White Stripes do put their own unique stamp on it, and return to their more familar guitar based sound and Jack sings mournfully about seeking comfort in the "shelter of your arms". It is a really interesting song that builds to a very strong and memorable chorus, and there is a sinister, dark tone running throughout the song, it reminds me in some ways of their cover of "Lovesick".

I do think "Shelter Of Your Arms" is a great song that any Stripes fan should pick up, however for anyone else I would recommend getting one of their albums instead, especially as this only has two songs on it.

It's a shame that the videos for their singles aren't included on the CDs as they were with previous albums, because The Denial Twist video is great, very bizarre and funny, dealing with The Stripes going on the Conan O'Brien show, dodging giant feet, driving oddly shaped cars, whilst the perspective constantly switches so they change size throughout. It was directed by Michael Gondry who has directed a number of their videos, which were among their best, so it would have been nice to see it included on this disc to give us a little more value for money.

However, based just on the strength of "Shelter Of Your Arms" this is definitely worth a purchase from any Stripes fans or anyone interested in hearing two very different songs that represent the band well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good for a 2 song single 24 Jan 2006
By Olivier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Well to be honest, there's only two songs and man, that's not cool. But the good news is "The Denial Twist" is probably the best track off Get Behind Me Satan and "Shelter Of Your Arms" is the first instance of Jack White using a wah pedal - and it rocks. If the single's price isn't too steep for you and you're going to pay for your music, then this track is worth paying for. Jesus its $13 American... Okay so listen to it at your friend's house. But listen to it!! Because the extra track is really good. It has some wah guitar, a cool driving backbeat, some piano and some hauntingly/appropriately distant vocals from Jack.
