Lovely book 5 Feb 2011
By Mr P.
Good book at a good price, plenty of info with interesting and fully relevant illustrations which don't excessively dominate, leaving sufficient text not to feel ripped off. Arrived perfect, no probs.

Incomplete and wildly imbalanced 15 Feb 2009
By Multiple Cells - Published on Amazon.com
The words definitive and encyclopedia at the very least imply some measure of comprehensive, non-biased coverage of the subject. While the book is large, it has failed miserably. Three of my favorite bands growing up in the late seventies / early eighties are glaringly omitted. These were the first three that I tried to find, so who knows what else is missing.

Quite literally, everyone I knew liked these bands and had all of their albums. We used to camp overnight to get tickets to see their shows; if you didn't, you stayed at home when they played.

You may have heard of them, regardless of age: Journey, Styx, and Kansas. Throughout the book, the criteria of either commercial success or influence on music is used in the blurbs about the bands. These bands had both.

Also, the balance of the bands that are included shows the highly opinionated nature of the book. No one band has influenced their genre (progressive rock) more than Rush; they have a small blurb about them. And yet the Who has a multi-page spread. This is biased, not encyclopedic.

I have to assume that the patterns continue throughout the book, which cannot be trusted with its information in the way its title suggests. It should be called "A book with pictures and notes about bands I like."
not pleased... 24 Nov 2010

I bought this item for $10 at Borders. No wonder it was on sale, it's a piece of crap! I, being a big fan of rock music in the 70s and 80s, decided to look up some of my favorite bands. To my surprise, they weren't on the book. Joan Jett, who is totally iconic during the 80s, and Suzi Quatro, practically the first woman to be in a rock band, are not even mentioned. Furthermore, the book splits the artists into "Key Artists" and then "A-Z of artists." This is slightly confusing to me, because who is the author to decide who is a "Key Artist" or not? It is a totally subjective point of view. Also, the book feeds 2 pages of facts to the readers - no further insights of the artists are given. All you see are pages after pages of album release dates and major concerts. What is even more ridiculous - a band like "The Runaways" are summed up into 4 sentences, no joke! How will the fans of these artists/bands feel when they read this? I find this pecking order that the book created extremely offensive. In conclusion, the "Definitive Illustrated Encyclopedia or Rock" is an incomplete and misleading guide to the history of rock. Are you wiling to pay $39 to be disappointed? I would not.
