Product Description

CD Description

Cilla Black outsold all other female recording artists in Britain during the 1960s and was the second most successful act after The Beatles to emerge out of the Liverpool Merseybeat boom. She has to date released 15 studio albums and 36 singles (many of which charted world-wide). She went on to become Britain's most popular TV entertainer and host two of the longest-running Saturday evening entertainment shows of the 1980s and 1990s - Blind Date (1985-2003) and Surprise, Surprise (1984-2001).

This set includes all of Cilla's 19 Top Forty hits (including her two number one singles, 'Anyone Who Had A Heart' & 'You're My World') plus classic covers and other essential Cilla tracks - also included are 5 songs which debut on CD format and 6 previously unreleased tracks. The DVD contains over 20 performances, many taken from her hugely successful BBC TV series simply entitled `Cilla' - this popular TV series ran from 1968 to 1976 reaching, at its peak, over 18 million viewers each episode!

I'm only 16 and really I only ever knew Cilla from 'Blind Date' I knew she'd been a singer back in the sixties and so I decided to check some of her music out ( I love sixties music) and WOW shes pretty good! This cd has everything you need on! its full of sixties beats and ballads, as well as some pretty awesome covers! Anybody who doubts or ever doubted her talent should really listen to this! shes paved the way for british female singers! A great collection of great quality and jam packed..and for the price lets be honest, you can't complain..

This Definative collection from The Wonderfull Cilla Black is long overdue. All the hits are here. with a few bonus track released for the first time on CD. but the gem in the collection is Cilla's first DVD release, mostly taken from her variety series CILLA of the 60's and 70's. Not seen the DVD yet. but remember all these shows. This collection is a must for anyone who is a fan of Cilla Black or anyone who ever doubted Cilla's talent as a singer or performer. A true british institute. finally getting the recognition she deserves from EMI. Who are releasing all her studio albums on download in september.

Watched Cilla on the "One Show" on BBC TV, and the then forthcomming release.
As I grew up on Cilla, I thought why not reminice with the sounds of the 60/70's.
I placed the order and as promised it was delivered to the door on time.
A cracking CD & DVD which has given me some time to remember the those days.

Career and family responsibilities meant the so-called Swingin' Sixties somehow passed me by, so I now retrospectively derive pleasure from the explosion of talent that prevailed during that decade through various anthologies which, thoroughly researched with wisdom of hindsight, give a balanced view of an artiste's recorded output. Cilla Black, princess of Merseyside pop with close links with The Beatles, eventually became queen of game shows and now rules as dowager duchess of celebrity, so it's easy to forget she once outsold most UK girl singers with fifteen studio albums (now available as downloads) and thirty-six singles - of which two reached number one (ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART and YOU'RE MY WORLD) amongst her nineteen Top Forty hits. Those hits join Cilla's classic covers, other essential tracks, five songs new to CD and previously unreleased cuts to make this two-disc overview totally absorbing.

Of course, Cilla was fortunate to have Sir George Martin as inspiring record producer from the outset of her career in 1963 until 1973, with his creative insight enabling her continuing popularity. HITS + RARE SINGLES, the title of the first CD, naturally includes Cilla's debut recording LOVE OF THE LOVED, penned by Lennon & McCartney; then moves forward through those heavyweight emotional ballads with Continental origins that were best suited to Cilla's stratospheric stridency. However STEP INSIDE LOVE (Lennon & McCartney) and the winsome LIVERPOOL LULLABY demonstrate her ability to take a mellower path without losing expressive depth.

Cilla Black's fans have had it quite good, this is after all only the third, lavish three disc box set available of Britain's most successful girl singer of the 1960s. On top of that, her first two studio albums are available on a '2-on-1' CD, as well as individual sets focusing on both her '60s and '70s recordings. Her hits have been re-issued over and over and over again on almost identical compilations, but as this is a celebratory set (45 years in the biz!), it would have been wrong not to have included them again on here.

But it's a bit mean to only include five songs that debut on CD, after all her fans seem to pretty devoted, and as this is a budget release that will only receive limited exposé, it's those people who will be buying it, and by omitting album only songs that are already on CD for more gems that are gathering dust in the vaults, would have made this even more essential to their Cilla collections. However, it's not the music that makes this a 'hot' release for the fans, it's the fact that the third disc is actually her first-ever DVD. It's a good little DVD as well, 27 vintage TV performances from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, and a bunch of extras like rare photographs, her official biography and a discography. It's the Cilla set that has everything!

There have been many Cilla collections before, and 'The Definitive Collection' doesn't differ all that greatly in terms of the CDs, but as this one includes a bonus DVD, and at this price - fans of Ms. Black should be snapping it up straight away.
