Asia's hugely successful 1982 debut `Asia' could never really hope to be matched by their subsequent releases. `Heat of the Moment' was an instant hit, so too were most of the songs on that debut album. Numerous personnel changes during the 1980's and 90's may have introduced a host of talented musicians, but the result was probably more of a diluting of identity of the music and where it should have progressed.
The formation of two Asia bands - the original `Asia' and another one featuring vocalist/bassist John Payne who joined in 1992 and now fronts up the band `Asia Featuring John Payne' has only served to add to the confusion.
This compilation album thankfully avoids confusion by including songs from just three studio albums, arguably their best, Asia, Alpha and Astra. (plus one extra track `Days Like These').
Heat of the Moment opens, followed by four further tracks from the Asia album, then five from Alpha, and three by Astra. Ardent fans would probably suggest a greater representation of the band's music, but in reality this collection I think offers the best of what it had to offer.
The extra track Days Like These, featuring American guitarist Steve Lukather (Toto, Hold the Line solo) displays a new progression which if continued would almost certainly have carried the band into a new and fresh era of the 1990s, but Lukather left and Asia continued its ever changing identity which perhaps ultimately prevented the success into the true `Arena' band status which beckoned.
A great 1980's English rock band.
