Another great book in the Amelia Peabody series. Its all set in London so makes a refreshing change from the other books, which are set in Egypt. Its all gas lit streets and fog. Very Sherlock Holmes. Rameses is growing to a frighteningly precocious child who is not afraid to enlist the help of the butler and the rest of the staff, much to the chargin of his mother, in his effort to save his parents from one scrape after another. This book has some parts that made me laugh out loud on the train, always embarrassing, and others that are really gripping. Unexpected twists and intrigues all the way along. Fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5th of the amelia peabody series... 7 Jan 2007

... this is the one where they stay in London rather than go to Egypt, and investigate nefarious happenings in the British Museum and in deserted old mansions. Ramses first shows off his less-than-polished skills at disguise, and Amelia almost succumbs to the villain! Brilliant escapist read.

I thoroughly enjoy the Amelia Peabody series. I sit and chortle at the sly humour and gentle parody that permeate the books. This one is slightly different being set in the damp of London rather than the heat of Egypt. I wondered if the formula would translate well. My fears were groundless as it is another ridiculous romp round late Victorian values and well worth a read.
