This is another excellent book from Tony Strong. Set in New York City the heroine (anti-heroine ?), Claire Rodenburg, helps a detective agency to entrap unfaithful husbands while undertaking a drama course in a top academy. The murder plot leads her into the sleazy world of S & M internet chatrooms and mysterious undercover police operations , with the dark poetry of Baudelaire linking the whole stylish narrative together. Like all of Strong's books , this is superbly written , the characterisations are detailed and compelling and there are as many twists and turns in the plot as you can handle . However the depth of this novel lies in its insights into and exploration of the nature of acting and fantasising and their consequences , which in the end are quite chastening for all concerned .One of the best and most intelligent psychological thrillers you could expect to read this year .

Incredible 30 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a great novel. i thoroughly enjoyed his previous two books, and this one is possibly even better. Definitely a thriller for the new century.

I love his sharp, abrupt writing style. It can seem simple at first, but actually contains many many layers. the characters he draws are realistic and quirky. very enjoyable to read about. The plot contains loads of stunning twists, all of which are completely unexpected. However, at times, after the twists, things werent always re-explained, so we werent sure which things before the twist are actualy real, and which are not. (this will probably make sense to people who have already read the book) however, i found that that mattered very little to me, and certainly didn't impede my enjoyment of the book.

At times it was distracting how the book jumped about at times, going from one event to the next, with little explanation/description. Nonetheless, this did add to the pace of the book, which is incredibly quick. I read it only in a couple of very enjoyable sittings.

Overall, this is a really brilliant thriller. the plot is absolutely original, the characters nice to read about, the plot twists clever, the villain chilling, etc etc etc. This is a very very highly reccomended thriller.

Fantastic! 19 Mar 2002

What a great thriller. The main character is an actress who the police enlist to help them catch a suspected internet killer. The plot jumps backwards and forwards between her acting life and her police work - so that when she starts to fall in love with the suspected killer, and begins declaring his innocence, we're never quite sure if she hasn't simply got too deeply immersed in her role. The creepiest villain this side of Mr Lecter, too. A great story. If this isn't made into a movie I'll be amazed.
