I have read the 2 reviews of this book, one good, one not so good. I am 79% through this book and I can hardly bear to read any more too quickly, simply because I don't want it to ever be finished. For me, it is absolutely unputdownable, and it is Penny at her best.

I have read all of her other books you have for sale, and although one of your readers says her books all follow the same theme, that in no way detracts from the unbelievable skill this writer shows in them all.

I wish I could heap far more praise on the book in detail, but I am not qualified enough to write the skilled reviews many of your readers can - I can only say that I rate this book at 5 stars, and if there were more stars available I would tick them all.

I don't know how long it will be before another new one emerges, but I'll be first in the queue, and have no hesitation in buying it immediately.

Penny Vincenzi's novels have always been one of my guilty pleasures so I pre-ordered this and saved it for my holiday. I never leave books behind in hotel rooms but made an exception for this one.

What a terrible disappointment. No plot to speak of, no likeable characters, a conclusion beyond dreadful - what WAS she thinking with that gymkhana chapter? You'll have to do an awful lot better before I buy another of your books again, Penny.

Very Disappointing 10 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love Penny Vincenzi and have read all of her novels. I looked forward to this as I had grown up during the Sixties. When I started the book, I certainly felt I was back there, the description of the world as it was then was drawn very well. Matt reflected the attitude of a lot of males of that time - wives only worked until they became mothers then they were expected to stay home. However, the whole Eliza/Matt relationship was doomed from the very start. Matt was obviously keen to become rich and successful, but although he achieved this, throughout the story he remained a working class workaholic with a huge chip on his shoulder. It left me wondering if Eliza hadn't got pregnant whether the relationship would have eventually fizzled out. The story line and its sub plots were woven well, but I found myself having more sympathy with some of the characters in those sub plots than with E & M. Emmie I found not at all endearing. There were aspects of her character which showed she was smart and bright, but others when she was a total brat who always had to have her own way and the last say.

I agree with another reviewer that the Eliza/Heather friendship was not really believable for that time, given the huge difference in their respective backgrounds, but it was obviously needed for part of the plot to work. During the time I was reading I found myself often skipping over parts of the book. For me the story was not at all 'unputdownable' and by the time we got to the court case I really didn't care who won the battle over Emmie.

I single out Old Sins and An Outrageous Affair as totally superb reads, unfortunatley I cannot say the same about The Decision.
