The fourth and final book in Mishima's landmark tetralogy, The Sea of Fertility

Product Description

The dramatic climax of The Sea of Fertility tetraology takes place in the late 1960s. Honda, now an aged and wealthy man, discovers and adopts a sixteen-year-old orphan, Toru, as his heir, identifying him with the tragic protagonists of the three previous novels, each of whom died at the age of twenty. Honda raises and educates the boy, yet watches him, waiting.

Not until I read Orhan Pamuk's "The Museum of Innocence" did I believe there would be a book to come close to Mishima's "The Sea of Fertility" in it's depiction of the awesome loneliness of living. Magnificent and astonishing reading.

This book is the concluding part to the Sea of Fertility quartet by Mishima--generally considered his magnus opus. As an individual book it is inferior in characterisation, plot strength and beauty of expression than Spring Snow and the third book but better than Runaway Horses (book 2). However the ending is so stunning and original that it leaves one mentally exhausted and yet thrilled. The ending turns the whole story so far (from Book 1) on its head and for that reason I will not disclose it. Suffice it to say that of all the books I have read this has the most unexpected and mind-bending ending. I was left in awe!

Amazing! 29 Nov 2011

Format:Paperback
The man who influenced Haruki Murakami writes so wonderfully I'm utterly appalled I didn't discover him decades ago. But having only recently discovered such translations from Japanese to English, it was not probable. A wonderful contribution to The Sea of Fertility collection. And any author who, on reaching the end of his final work, commits suicide by seppuku (sword through stomach disembowelment thing) has to be considered the ultimate creative artist. But shocking end of life apart, his writing is up there with the likes of Laurens van der Post, Maugham, Greene and any number of western literary geniuses.
