Product Description

The New World, 1545...

Vanquished by the Spanish Empire, little remains of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. From the ashes of their cities, a unified legend emerges: the Christians who conquered them possessed a mysterious object, an artifact so powerful-so deadly-that it was known throughout the Americas as "the death relic."

Yucatan Peninsula, present day...

When Maria Pelati's research team disappears in Mexico, Jonathon Payne and David Jones embark on a perilous mission to find the missing archaeologists. The duo quickly finds a link between the group's work and its recent disappearance. Following the clues left behind, the duo tries to solve one of the darkest mysteries of the new world, but their quest for the relic might cost them their lives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not much story 9 May 2012
Format:Paperback
Oh dear! I refused to give up on this one as I had thoroughly enjoyed his previous books. To much banter between Payne and Jones for a start. That together with the historical data that overwhelms the plot. What plot I hear you say too right! One of the worst books I have read for a long time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 30 Nov 2011
By Kulana
Format:Kindle Edition
I've enjoyed Chris Kuznetski's other books but this one is 75% history lesson, 20% irritating dialogue between Payne & Jones, 4% plot and 1% denoument. I could have jumped to the last 10 pages and saved myself some time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Payne and Jones 29 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Having supported and followed Chris Kuzneski from his very first offerings I always look forward to a new Payne and Jones book with delight and excitement. This was no different causing me to stop reading another book half way through so I could start this one as soon as it plopped through the door. I was not disappointed at all. The traditional banter between the characters was there and all the same familiar characters put in an appearance. In addition to this there was a return to some old characters from the second book. The fiery Maria returned a character I greatly enjoyed when she made an appearance the first time.

However, don't panic if you haven't read any of the other books because the author summarises the past stories to allow you to read this as a stand alone book brilliantly. My only criticism if I had one would be that the end scene was a little rushed and could have maybe lasted a couple of extra pages although the last chapter then summarises what happened.

In addition to being an excellent author Chris Kusneski goes one further in thrill his fans. A web page dedicated to pictures from the areas contained in the book and a constant communication with his fans. This is an author who knows how to keep his fans happy a brilliant combination of enthralling writing and fan appreciation. Please buy and read this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lost the plot 29 Nov 2012
By RWW
Format:Paperback
Having read all of Kuzneski's previous Payne and Jones books I was looking forward to this latest outing for the dynamic duo. How disappointed was I when 2/3rds of the way into the book the story hadn't even started. It is a love in between the two main characters, a cliche along the lines of 'Ebony and Ivory' by McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Yes we know black and white people live in perfect harmony, it's great, we've learnt a lot about each other and we cherish our multi-cultural society, but do we need a lengthy book about nothing but. Also, most people reading this book will have read the previous books in the series so shouldn't need to be reminded about the characters all the time. All in all a dreadful waste of time and effort by author and readers alike. Unless Kuzneski has some new ideas and stops patronising his readers it's the last of his books I will read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - Could have been so much better 29 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Really enjoyed all Chris's previous books but this latest got so bogged down in the repetitive, banal and irritating verbal interplay between the two heroes and all this was to the detriment of the overall plot and background information. Wonderful opportunity on this interesting subject missed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plot, what plot 14 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Banal. So much time spent on unnecessary detail. One dimensional 'plot', nothing happens in the first 250 pages. I persisted in reading it to the end, but I don't know why.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull and predictable 5 Nov 2011
By Akira
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Poorly written with predictable, 2 dimensional characters. An exciting plot and faster pace of action could have rescued this - these were also lacking. Really struggled to finish this one and not because I don't like cheesy thrillers (I enjoy Dan Brown and others).

1.0 out of 5 stars big disapointment 10 Jan 2012
By lev
Format:Paperback
Having read and loved the previous books by chris i was looking forward to this new one with relish. I was halfway through another book and dropped it as soon as this was delivered. I now wish i hadn't. A huge disapointment. Alot of time is spent going over the background of payne and jones, i'd much rather he just mention them and say "read the plantation for full details". Of course i understand why he does this but to be honest i found it started to drag on in this book. There is little in a story line compared to previous books and the ending, well what ending...?
After the Secret Crown gave us alot of facts mixed in with fiction creating such a truly wonderful and interesting read i have to say the Death Relic just didn't live up to the standard expected.
I'm sorry to say this is the first time i have ever written a review and so must sum up my disapointment.
