It has to be said that I'm not a great short story lover, so choosing to download this great story was a bit of a risk for me. However, it was well worth it because I loved it, laughed out loud several times and wanted to give Hilarius a cuddle. (How weird is that? Wanting to give the pope a cuddle??)
Hazel Grian has transported herself into the overwhelmed head of poor Pope Hilarius II and allows us to see and feel Hilarius' desperation at his completely proscribed life. The story made me wonder - what must it be like to have your life run for you; organised, diaried, no room for manoeuvre? I can't imagine the benefits of being a member of a royal family or, as we see, the pope outweigh the disadvantages.
A wonderful, funny and sweet story that I recommend you read. Immediately.
