Product Description

A serial killer more terrifying than you could ever imagine . . .

Seventeen-year-old Megan Carver was an unlikely runaway. A straight-A student from a happy home, she studied hard and rarely got into trouble. Six months on, she's never been found.

Missing persons investigator David Raker knows what it's like to grieve. He knows the shadowy world of the lost too. So, when he's hired by Megan's parents to find out what happened, he recognizes their pain - but knows that the darkest secrets can be buried deep.

And Megan's secrets could cost him his life.

Because as Raker investigates her disappearance, he realizes everything is a lie. People close to her are dead. Others are too terrified to talk. And soon the conspiracy of silence leads Raker towards a forest on the edge of the city. A place with a horrifying history - which was once the hunting ground for a brutal, twisted serial killer.

A place known as the Dead Tracks. . .

Missing persons investigator David Raker's journey into the darkness of the human psyche continues with his latest nail-biting case - the disappearance of a teenage girl that rapidly spirals into an altogether more nightmarish scenario.

What elevates Weaver's latest above the glut of `tec fiction is a relentless (sick!) imagination that nevertheless feels firmly grounded in grim reality. Meticulous care is invested in fleshing out each and every character which - allied to snappy, convincing dialogue, assured handling of some pulse-quickening action sequences and a tangible sense of authenticity when it comes to the specifics of police work - results in a belting thriller.

Top stuff then, I blasted through it in two days!

It is with great anticipation that I picked up this second book in the Raker series. You see I enjoyed the first outing into David Raker's world so much in Chasing the Dead, that I found myself thinking I may not get as sucked in second time around. Well of course I was wrong, this was another rocket fueled book, with clever twists and turns, that made me want to keep on reading. At no time did the feeling of treading old ground come up, when references to the first book were made; so often authors use this mechanic as a way to pad the story and make up the page count, but not here. The book weaves is way along, drawing the reader further in, sudden changes in direction punctuate the book in a way that makes you sit up and take more notice, especially in some of the more darker, twisted scenes. On that note some of those scenes are pretty nasty, and quite frankly the more nasty, muddled and messed up the better for me ( I love a great villain me) Mr Weaver has a way of taking something quite innocent and making it dark, foul and corrupt in a way that only makes the activities of the key villain seem more justified in their actions. It makes for great story telling. It is this that leads me to my only criticism. The girl who has been taken and David Raker is trying to find, I simply did not care about. Take her I thought, do what you want with her, and her parents too. I know this sounds strange but her story was not as rich as that of the other characters, and I was left with feeling that this was perhaps deliberate in some way, perhaps a way to make he reader connect more fully with the truly twisted villain, and reinforce David Raker's character. Call me old fashioned but I am sure you are supposed to care for the victim, but here I just didn't. As for David Raker, well his story pans out in a way I had hoped for, he is a great character, one who you can genuinely care for and want to read more about, so when the third installment hits the shelves you can be sure that I will there to pick it up. In short, if you like your thrillers to have intelligence, grit and a smattering of the "oh my god, this could actually happen" then this book is worth every penny. If you have not read Chasing the Dead, then pick them both up, reading them back to back would be time well spent.

Excellent! 8 Jun 2011

From an unlikely runaway being tracked by an ex-journalist (due to a seemingly disinterested police investigation slows), to the mystery of a sighting of a century-old long dead killer - the plot thickens, curls and intruigues. Who to believe? What secrets are they not telling? Is innocence as it seems....? So many questions and as Raker investigates,he soon realises everything is a lie.
A trail and conspiracy that leads him to the "Dead Tracks". This is an unforgettable thriller of the highest genre.

I will now have to back-"Track" and read the first Raker novel, "Chasing the Dead" to fully comprehend the main character of Raker. If the second book is an indication, I am sure his first was just as good.

I will also look forward to yet another book by Tim Weaver, new to the UK crime-writing scene, but with a full journalistic background to call upon. I am sure we will see more from this very talented author. The Dead Tracks
