'The Dead of Summer' is the fifth novel from the author
set on the picturesque Swedish island of Gotland, and
featuring characters that appear in all the previous novels.
Peter Bovide,is a builder,staying with his family in a
caravan on the island, when out for a morning jog,he is shot
in the head, and then repeatedly in the stomach,by what later
is discovered to be a 1920's Russian pistol.
Inspector Knutas and his team follow lines of enquiry
connected with the victim's work, and seem to be making slow
but steady progress, but Knutas thinks they are missing
something. And so it proves,as the story moves towards its
surprising conclusion, that makes one ponder on the nature
of justice.
This is a fine police procedural novel, made better by the
developing stories of the perennial characters.
