Book Description

6 Aug 2009

A mother and her son have been executed in their home and fingerprint matches show their attacker died twenty years ago.

But how can dead serial killers return to haunt the present?

The answers lie in the darkest shadows of The Dead Room.

When CSI Darby McCormick is called to the crime scene, it's one of the most gruesome she's ever seen. But the forensic evidence is even more disturbing: someone watched the murder unfold from woodland behind the house - and the killer died in a shoot-out two decades earlier.

The deeper Darby digs, the more horrors come to light. Her prime suspect is revealed as a serial killer on an enormous scale, with a past that's even more shocking than his crimes, thanks to a long-held secret that could rock Boston's law enforcement to its core.

Is it possible to steal an identity? Or are dead men walking in Darby's footsteps? The line between the living and the dead has never been finer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 4 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I am such a huge fan of Chris Mooney and I am always excited when he has a new book out!

The Dead Room brings back our main heroine - Darby and she is as tough and smart as ever. The opening chapter introduces us to Darby as she works out for the SWAT team. Some of the stuff she has to do would make the back of your hair stand up, but Darby is up to the task. I immediately liked this - I like that Mooney has no problem creating a main character that can be both smart and charming and as tough as nails -as she goes up against the guys - toe to toe without flinching.

The Dead Room is a story of corruption and betrayal at its deepest levels. Darby will soon discover that she can no longer trust anyone around her - that the people she thought were her friends and co-workers all have separate and hidden agendas. This will become painfully clear as Darby works through a strange murder case - where one surviving member asks to speak with her father (who is dead). Darby meets with him only to be told that there is a huge secret out there - but Darby will need to uncover this secret on her own as the witness decides to kill himself before he can give her more information.

There are so many twists and turns in this story that you won't have a clue who are the "good" guys and who are the "bad" guys. I love stories of corruption as they always produce excellent thrilers - and this one is no exception.

I found myself rooting for Darby and was extremely surprised and somewhat upset by the developments between Darby and Coop who has some deep secrets of his own.

The story goes at a frantic pace and you need to focus to keep up - every other page throws you a clue and a new event to absorb and challenge you. I never knew what would come up next and I wasn't even sure if Darby would survive this one.

I highly suggest that you run to to the store to buy this great thriller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast Moving Thriller 4 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having absolutely loved Chris Mooney's last two novels, I couldn't wait to read this one. As in his previous novels the main character is Darby , a resourceful and intelligent cop, following in the footsteps of her dead father, Red.

Unfortunately I was somewhat disappointed this time. The novel certainly had numerous twists and turns, and kept the reader gripped. However,in my humble opinion, this is much more a man's book. There are numerous descriptions of weapons and spying equipment, which I found tedious.

Furthermore (and I hate myself for this!) One of the characters had a major speech impediment and I found her dialogue difficult to enjoy, to the point that I skipped some of it. I'm a pretty patient person, being a teacher of pupils with special needs, but I found the dialogue frustrating.

I did enjoy the twist in the novel, but can't tell you about it, as it would spoil the story line. You'll know it when you read it. Suffice to say, all is not what it seems!

I'm certainly not saying this is a bad book, just not as good as his last two. You, of course, may love it!

... story awesome, twisted and thrilling - here is the right author for You: Chris Mooney.

His heroine Darby McCormick is an expert in CSI and trained as a SWAT.
Right from the beginning, this thriller rolls like a rollercoaster ride!
First there is to handle a hostage case - but without killing the perp who holds a helpless woman in his grip...
Then Darby is called to a gruesome crime scene in her hometown where a woman has been tortured and slaughtered brutally before the eyes of her 12-year old son.
And the son in the hospital is calling for Thomas McCormick - Darby's late father, killed in the line of duty by a schizofrenic apparently without any reason...
So Darby takes over and the boy starts to open up - until the events are speeded up by a FED agent, trying to get his hands on the poor shocked boy. Who does out of pure fear something unthinkable to himself...

Some pieces of evidence from the crime scene show the attackers apparently died twenty years ago. But how can dead mob killers return to haunt the present? The answers lie in the murky shadows of 'The Dead Room'.
But the forensic evidence is even more disturbing: someone watched the attack unfold from the woodland behind the house and interfered in the murder scene, saving the boy's life...
The deeper Darby digs, the more horrors come to light. In a house human bones are found - obviously young women murdered by a serial killer on an enormous scale, with a past that's even more shocking than his crimes.
And all those revelations point to some evil secrets that could rock Boston's law enforcement to its core. And an unknown avenger is crossing the paths with the killers, and the number of corpses rises.
Darby has a hard case to crack - an she does it with her usual wits and tricks.

A pure delight for every friend of a good thriller!
