Book Description

16 July 2009

Highly Commended by the Sheffield Children's Book Award 2010.

Lauren and her aunt and uncle are returning to London after years living away in Cornwall. For Lauren it is a return to the sight of a terrible family tragedy and a house full of ghosts. When she was six years old her mum and little sister were murdered in their home...and Lauren's dad was put in prison for the crime. Now she is living a stones's throw from her old house, and despite her trepidation, Lauren is curious to know who lives there now, and how the house will make her feel. When she becomes friendly with Nathan, the son of the new owners, she finds herself back at the scene of so many nightmares...of memories, but also of things forgotten. Lauren blocked out a lot of that fateful day, but now that she'd older, things are coming back to her...things that could mean her dad is innocent, not guilty of murder. After all these years of hating him Lauren now faces the prospect of loving her dad once again. But is it that easy?

Review

The writing is assured and eftly paced... a wry glance at the moral values of modern society. *****

(Books For Keeps 20091101)

'This is a successful psychological thriller that gallops along.'

(Daily Telegraph 20091201)

Cassidy's challenging fiction never sidesteps difficult issues.

(Daily Mail 20090731)

A tough story... but only too plausible. Gripping.

4.0 out of 5 stars intriging... 13 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Okay so this isnt the best book ive ever read but it was better than I expected. All the characters made mistakes but this just made them much more belivable as people. It had a twist at the ending that completely surprized me, so although i expected to be disapointed i just got more drawn in.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dead House 6 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
When I first read the outline for this story I knew I'd have to read it quickly, and despite having a huge pile of books on my 'to be read' pile this went straight to the top. Having enjoyed Forget Me Not and Looking for JJ by this author I was confident that this would be good.

I was immediately intrigued by the premise: a girl, Lauren, moving back to the town where her mother and younger sister were murdered by her father, who is now in prison for the crime and has been since it happened ten years ago. If that's not horrific enough, things start to come to light that suggest her father may not be guilty after all. As Lauren's evidence was what convicted him, this understandably causes a huge amount of turmoil in her life. The book draws to a surprising conclusion which I did not see coming, although small clues are neatly threaded throughout.

What I especially liked was the honesty of the characters. Everybody in this book, including Lauren, is flawed, making the characters so much more believable and rounded. One example is Lauren recalling how she felt upon hearing of her grandfather's death (who she had not spent much time with and didn't not know very well): 'Lauren had felt like she should cry at the time but hadn't managed it.'

One small niggle which is nothing to do with the story itself - the edition I read (1st) has a lot more typo errors than expected in a book of this size. I counted at least seven, things such as full stops missing and in one place the word 'eyes' was missing an 'e' to read 'yes'. I found this quite distracting and more annoying as the book went on as it was jolting me out of the story every time I came across one. I hope they'll be corrected for future editions!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Couldn't put it down!....... 15 July 2012

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was absolutely amazing! Its a story of a girl, scarred by her past. Years ago her mother and baby sister were supposedly murdered in her parents bedroom. The little girl wakes up with a pillow over her head and her baby sisters, and her mother crouched in the corner of the room with a deep, bloody wound in her chest. Her father stands over her mother, unaware of her watching, holding a knife in his hand. She was the only survivor. Surely her father was to blame? But does she know that for sure, for as the story continues the mystery of the crime unfolds and she realises that all is not what it seems. This book was fantastic but I would recommend it for 11+ only because of one violent murder scene. I hope this review was helpful.
