Book Description

29 May 2011
Stunning new novel by critically acclaimed Irish writer Carlo Gebler, this book addresses the miscarriages of justice endemic in the Irish judicial system. On a wet November morning in 1940 Harry Gleeson discovered the body of Moll McCarthy in a field near the village of New Inn, Co. Tipperary. Moll McCarthy had been shot twice with a shotgun, once in the face - Carlo Gebler's novel is an attempt to explain how the local police fabricated their case and fitted up Harry Gleeson, and why an entire community looked away as the Irish judicial system prosecuted, convicted and condemned to death an innocent man. Albert Pierrepoint (the hangman) executed Harry Gleeson in Mountjoy in April 1941.

A really enjoyable and gripping book. Gébler tells this story of IRA brutality and the apathy of the establishment with great warmth and humanity. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant novel 7 May 2013
By Reader
Format:Paperback
I can't remember the last time I read a book so quickly. It's absorbing and fascinating and incredibly moving, but not at all sentimental, and the story is told sparely and elegantly. I think that the cover does the book a disservice, though - I think it would be much more representative if it had a period cover in the style of The Suspicions of Mr Whicher or The Missing Postman. This is small thing, though, and shouldn't stop anyone from buying this really wonderful book. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant novel 19 Feb 2013

Carlo Gebler is a most underrated writer. I first came across his books when I read "Father and I", a very moving raw account of life with his father Ernest.
Dead Eight is a very well written novel about a true event in New Inn Co Tipperary that led to the controversial hanging of an alleged innocent man Harry Gleeson, his description of rural Ireland and the local characters in the 1930's-1940's is superbly crafted. This novel is highly recommended.
