If you havent succeeded at a healthy eating regime in the past, its easy to lose faith and be very self critical. This book looks at some simple lifestyle changes that can support a calmer way of being and suggestions why a perfectionist approach to diet will never make you happy. Stress isn't a one size fits all thing, so I found the quizzes useful to look at why I was either binging or being very rigid in my diet, it also looks at habits such as internet and over stimulation and I definitely recognised that I eat much worse if I had a week of late nights through socialising or work. I tried this book for 3 weeks before taking a Christmas break and although weight loss wasn't my goal, I did notice being more satisfied from meals as I was giving them more time and theres a few things Im going to carry on doing longterm. This isnt a quick fix book, but if you are taking a more holistic approach to your health which includes being less reliant on stimulants to get you through the day then I would recommend giving it a go.

I have tried every diet going over the years and none of them ever properly explained the link between stress and putting on weight. I have had constant stress for many years with a deadline-based job that meant regular late nights, slumped over a desk and not much exercise. I always thought that craving stodgy food and sugary drinks was down to greed and poor food choices but this book explains why when you're stressed your body craves sugar for extra fuel that you then don't use up. It opened my eyes to a lot of things and I loved the fact that the diet is not calorie-counting or tough to follow. You don't feel deprived on it at all.
There are also lots of great tips and the yoga and simple exercises by personal trainer Charlene Hutsebaut are easy to do and don't require much time commitment at all.
My new year's resolution is to give up dieting and, having done this diet for the past six weeks, I am now in a position to do that. I feel like I know my body better and can now make informed choices about my lifestyle. I am full of energy and am zipping about like I did in my early 20s - and I've gone down a dress size! I'd recommend this diet not just to those wanting to lose weight but also to those who are stressed out and want to make some simple changes to ensure that you remain calm and serene in 2012 - and beyond.

Sustainable changes 20 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
Although I don't consider myself to be particularly stressed, I have gone through some extremely stressful periods during the last few years and exhibit very many of the symptoms of someone who is chronically stressed. As a result I was excited to read this book. Rather than try to implement everything at once, I added a few changes at a time and paid particular attention to the nutritional guidelines. For the first 3 or 4 weeks, I seemed to be constantly ill, however I did seem to recover more quickly than I normally would, and once that period has passed I have to admit that I'm feeling great.

I don't miss grains at all and no longer have a 3pm slump. I have more energy in the evenings. My sleep has improved (although it is still far from perfect, having had sleeping problems for many years). I've become more creative with my cooking and am really enjoying my food, feeling satisfied and without cravings.

Weightloss is slow - but it is there. More noticeable is the inch loss and the feeling of wellbeing which to me is more important than a number on a scale.

After the initial 6 week period, I've kept up with the nutritional changes and am adding more of the exercise suggestions. I feel better than I have in years. If you're looking for a quick fix, this isn't the book for you, but if you're looking for small changes that will make a real difference and that you can sustain for life, then I can't recommend it highly enough.

If I have one small criticism it would be that throughout the book there are many, many suggestions but not a definitive list of 'do this', 'don't do that'. Whilst in some ways this is a good thing as it is a more gentle approach which doesn't lay down the law, personally I found that I finished the book with so many suggestions of things to change swimming around in my head that it made it a little difficult to decide what to do first....you couldn't possibly remember them all at once. However what it did make me do was implement a few suggestions and then re-read the book to look for more.
