I first starting reading John Fardell's Maddie the Baddie to my grandson Jude when he was only three. Three years on it remains his favourite bedtime reading. The lovely illustrations are so profuse and diligently executed that even now we spot previously unnoticed material. The Day Lewis Got Eaten had us both in fits of laughter from the word go. From the laconic "unfortunately Louis got eaten ..." to, and beyond, the point where he is eaten five or six more times it is another example of this fine author and illustrator's supremacy in writing for both children and adults who love to read to them. I have followed John Fardell's brilliant cartoon work in Viz for many years. High time this man got at least a knighthood if not a Nobel prize for literature.

A wonderful and delightful book. My son (also called Louis!) loves this story. Louis and his sister go out for a walk when Louis gets eaten by a monster... then the monster gets eaten by a bigger monster and so on. I particularly like beautiful and detailed illustrations. On every page you can see a tiny piece of the next monster to appear, and Sarah's innovative inventions are fab! Highly recommended :-)

My son and I first got this book from our local library. But after several attempts to get him to return it, I decided we'd better get a copy of our own. A lovely story where children have an adventure without Mum and Dad around, which is more unusual these days and the siblings get themselves out of trouble with their own ingenuity.
The 'monsters' have great names and the illustrations are superb. The text has repeated phrases to encourage interaction and it remains one of our favourites.
If I look forward to reading it. And reading it. And reading it.... without getting bored, it deserves its 5 stars from me.

A clever and well illustrated slim book for younger children. Perfect as a bedtime story that won't bore grown-ups even after repeated telling.

I don't think it's giving much away to reveal that the titular character gets eaten at the start of the story.

As a plot device, it certainly gets the immediate attention of a young reader. My six year old daughter was hooked from the beginning.

But it's what happens next that's really clever, as Louis' big sister tries to save the day. And watch what she does to her bicycle with each twist and turn of this adventure - this is where John Fardell's beautiful artwork comes into its own.

I've always liked John's adult cartoon strips in Viz, and his trio of novels for older children actually succeeded in tearing my 11 year old son away from Harry Potter!

Now he's done it for the much younger reader. Highly recommended.

My 4 year old boy is addicted to this book! He adores all the monsters and loves how there is a tiny bit of each monster shown in the page before it appears properly. Fabulous for getting boys into fiction through the dramatic storytelling but I am sure girls and boys will love it the same.

One of the best childrens books and have since bought more titles by this author which are also very good. My 2 and 4 year old love this, it really captures their imagination and they love seeing a clue as to what is on the next page. Love the names of all the creatures and the illustrations. Best book bought last year and we bought and read a lot!

Our son loves this book - originally got it from our local library, but decided we needed one for the bookshelf permanently. Great pictures and the names of the creatures are wonderful. First discovered it when he was 3, still going strong and he's nearly 5.
