Product Description

Black Books meets Lead Balloon meets Gavin and Stacey in this hugely entertaining follow-up to MYSTERY MAN, from acclaimed author Bateman.

The Small Shop Keeper With No Name is back. Hired to find the vandals responsible for spraying graffiti on an aspiring insurance magnate's advertising hoarding, he soon finds himself up to his ears in intrigue and battling to solve murders which echo in the corridors of power. With MI5 getting involved and everyone on the hunt for a missing Jack Russell, can Our Man Behind the Counter stay alive as well as keep his world renowned but criminally ignored No Alibis mystery bookshop afloat?

Bateman is Great man! 24 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the the follow up to the excellent Mystery Man and once again stars our man with no name; owner of the No Alibis bookshop and reluctant part-time detective; full time hypochondriac. This allows for extended and very funny riffs on the lead characters petty (but oh so serious) foibles;likes and dislikes and the ups and downs (mainly downs) of the crime book trade along with his obsession with Starbucks;his dreadful mother and the on/off girlfriend and partner in crime-stopping. At times it seems almost incidental that the book contains a plot concerning two unfortunate deaths; a missing Jack russell and the usual band of heavies and misfits. There are shades of Black Books; Father Ted and other sublimnal influences but the book is very much the creation of its writer and manages to be an easy read with laughs on almost every page and a cast of characters that always intrigue and entertain. To manage the lightness of touch needed to write such a deceptively clever novel is indeed an achievement and makes it well worth reading- Whether its wise to extend this into a lengthy series is another matter.Would it become too repetitive and stale? I am uncertain what the publishers have against the name Colin and marketing the book as by Bateman feels wrong but there is nothing wrong with this excellent comic creation- another one please COLIN!

Hilarious! 4 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the sequel to 'Mystery Man' and I think it's just as good. Not as dark but the characters are consistent. I look forward to reading more in this series.

'MYSTERY MAN' WAS A VERY DIFFERENT BOOK TO BATEMANS PREVIOUS TITLES. 'THE DAY OF THE JACK RUSSELL' IS A FOLLOW ON FROM 'MYSTERY MAN', INVOLVING THE SAME CHARACTERS. ALL JUST AS NUTTY AS BATEMANS OTHER CREATIONS AND BROUGHT TO LIFE IN A WAY THAT ONLY BATEMAN CAN ACHIEVE. 'THE DAY OF THE JACK RUSSELL' IS TOTALLY OFF THE WALL BUT YET TOTALLY DOWN TO EARTH AND BELIEVABLE.I FIND MYSELF LAUGHING OUT LOUD ONE MINUTE AND ALMOST CRYING THE NEXT. BATEMAN IS MY HERO! ITS NOT ESSENTIAL TO READ 'MYSTERY MAN' FIRST BUT OBVIOUSLY YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CHARACTERS IF YOU DO.

Brilliant, as always
Have just read this book back-to-back with "Dr Yes". Both books are as good as the first in the "Mystery Man" series. Bateman is my new favourite author. Read more

Laugh out loud funny
Not very often a book really makes you laugh out loud but Bateman's flawed hero is hilarious, really recommended for a lighthearted chuckle.

Everyone should read at least 1 Colin Bateman novel

The "difficult" sequel??
The only problem with this book is that it has to live up to the first installment called Mystery Man which was so funny. Read more

Pretty good
This isn't bad but it's not a touch on Orpheus Rising - if you haven't read that yet, get it instead of this is my advice.
