Book Description

3 Feb 2011

Niagara Falls, 1915

When Bess Heath returns to her family home near the picturesque falls, it is to an unfamiliar scene - the elegance of the life she once knew has vanished. Her father is a broken man, jobless and losing hope, and her mother is struggling to keep the family afloat. Isabel, the lively, charismatic sister Bess has always relied on is almost unrecognisable. Her engagement called off, she languishes in her bedroom, brooding and refusing to eat.

Through all of this Bess finds solace in Tom Cole, a man she met by chance the night she returned home. Constant, gentle and devoted to Bess, he understands better than anyone the awesome and potentially devastating power of the falls - and consoles her through a tragedy that nearly ruins her. But as their lives become more fully entwined, Bess is forced to make a painful choice between what she wants and what is best for her family . . .

A wonderful love story . . . Buchanan weaves Niagra Falls' history and her storytelling together masterfully (Elle )

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut novel 17 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In reality I have never been to Niagara Falls, it is on my list of places I want to see, but in my mind I have been thanks to Cathy Marie Buchanan. From the very first page of her novel her descriptive narrative makes you feel like you are there. I really enjoyed this captivating love story and along the way learnt a lot about the history of the Falls themselves. The addition of photographs was inspiring. I look forward to reading more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning! 18 April 2010
By C. Colley TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
On the final night of school term, Bess Heath discovers she will not be returning to Loretta Academy for her last year.

Beth returns to Glenview, her family home, to discover her father has lost his job at the Niagara Power Company. The housemaids have gone and her mother is dressmaking to keep the family afloat. Isabel also seems a different person from the sister she knew

Most of the families' financial problems could be solved if Bess accepts a marriage proposal from the son of a wealthy family, but her heart lies with Tom Cole, a man with a natural gift of knowing the Niagara river like the back of his hand

The character of Tom Cole is based on William "Red" Hill, Niagara's famous river man, in the 19th/ 20th century. Also at this time Hydro Powerhouses came into operation and feature strongly in the story.

This story is stunning! A powerful love story combined with the history of the magical Niagara Falls.
