Sometime ago when i was young the Clash were the Band - the Sex Pistols , Sham 69 and UK Subs made a good racket but lyrically the Clash had another level. Then came the new wave of early 80's anarchist punk bands - Crass, Conflict,Zounds and remarkably the Subhumans - a punk band with accute observation but not perhaps great literacy - Joe Strummer without a Thesaurus - sometimes simple but always vital and unusually for a punk band (more noticable on the follow up album)they had an obvious and very healthy love of early Black Sabbath. Stand out tracks on this album are
Subvert City - a mini epic filled with irony and passion.
Black and White "Government Bullsh*t, Remember the day the country died".
Big Brother - still great though we're along time past '84
'Til the Pigs Come round - "everyones been there!!"
and the almighty NO - "no i don't believe in Jesus Christ, my mother died of cancer when i was five"
If u you like passionate music, if you love pogoing , if you feel young, if you want to feel young , if you dont give a F**k, if you wish you still didn't give a F**k!!- whatever just buy it!!

This thoroughly recomended from 13 - 39 years old (maybe with a parental guidance for those who are 13)

Enjoy and indulge - you won't regret it

Cheers Six

REMEMBER "SILENCE IS NO REACTION"

Aaawwww come on..... 3 stars and a 1 star? Is your living room painted beige? Do you send you're kids to a private school? Do you vote Tory? Do you go fox-hunting on the weekend? This is a bona fide 5 star album through and through ****** It may have more than a hint of DIY-ness about it, and it may moan like f$$k about all sorts of stuff, but its british anarcho punk from the late 70's/early 80's so you've got to expect that. These songs are absolute classics of the genre. I can still remember, 25 years ago, the gatefold vinyl, pay no more than £3.50 on the cover, the handwritten lyrics, the class artwork and singing along word for word with each and every song locked away in my bedroom full of teenage angst......listening to it brings it all back and its still got that edge. Real music. Yes its a bit rough, but its a diamond in the rhiemond in the ruff. The Subhumans were one of the greatest punk bands ever, and back in the day they released a slew of classics. Check their other stuff out! This is probably not their best album but its definitely not their worst and is still worthy of 5 stars. If you want something truly unique with a retro sound, songs with a real zing, then get this....... as good as Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables by the mighty DK's, this is a disc that will add something special to any bloated music collection. Remember, The Day The Country Died. Yeah!!!

Not a bad album by any means, but nowhere near the greatness of the releases that followed. The Subhumans were still developing their style and sound at this point, and at the time I loved this record, it was better than most punk releases in 1983, less preachy than the other punk bands, and overall quite energetic and entertaining. The band showed a lot of promise, but the following album "From the Cradle to the Grave" was superior in every way possible; lyrically, musically, and production-wise.

If you are a newcomer to the Subhumans you should probably make this your final purchase. Out of all the studio albums I would start with the 2007 release "Internal Riot", then go for "Cradle to the Grave, "Worlds Apart", and "EP-LP". "The Day the Country Died" should probably be the last one on your list just to complete the collection.

Also worth mentioning: the early albums are currently being remastered. It wouldn't be a bad idea to wait for those because the production on the first couple is very thin, quiet, and lacking in low end. The production didn't improve significantly until "Worlds Apart" in 1985.

Overall, this is worth owning and there are some good moments. In some ways it's a bit of a classic, but the Subs went on to far better things.
