Singer/songwriter David Gates is perhaps best known for his role in crooning 1960s outfit Bread. Interestingly enough Gates left Bread at a time when they were riding high in all respects--hitting number one spots and gaining recognition around the world with catchy pop songs like "I Want to Make It with You". Since then he has enjoyed an eminent solo career, continuing to utilise his classical background to make sophisticated and accessible pop songs that are so highly polished you can see your face in them.

This collection contains many of Gates's most poignant songwriting moments, including some of his hit songs with Bread, much of his released solo material, and several new records. With poetic string arrangements, distinctive and effortlessly mercurial vocals and trademark soppiness aplenty, Gates ensures his songs have an evergreen romantic quality. Indefatigable sentimentalists will weep with joy at this collection, but there are some golden moments here that everyone should hear. --Paul Sullivan

This CD collects David Gates' best and biggest hits during his career. David can still write the hit ballad, as evidenced by the new tracks. Of the new tracks, "Mirror Mirror" is the best; a truly beauiful and moving ballad. I like how the new songs and the solo hits are mixed in between the Bread hits. Even though every Bread/David Gates fan probably owns all the Bread hits through the compilation CDs, its nice to hear them alongside the solo hits. A truly awesome CD that I will be (and have been) playing constantly.

If you own a bread greatest hits compilation then all the bread tracks on this cd are sure to be on yours, but this album also features the highlights of david's solo career, however, it does not include tracks from a couple of his later albums. The five new tracks are a breath of fresh air for all bread fans but they are not all new as 'Mirror, Mirror' was already heard some five years ago on Bread's 25 Aniversary Tour and 'Love Is Always Seventeen' was the title track to David's 1994 album, but it has been re-recorded on this compilation to make it 'new'. if you have always wanted to but a bread cd your best bet is probably 'anthology' or 'essentials' if you want all the hits, but this is good if you want to hear the full highlights of his career (I suppose thats why its called The David Gates Songbook - A LIFETIME OF MUSIC) I am a die hard fan of 'Bread' and only bought this album for the 'new' tracks. If you have got other bread albums and like the voice behind such classics as 'Look what you've done', 'Truckin' and 'Shes the only one' then buy a bread greatest hits album or this and other CD called 'James Griffin Sings The Bread Hits'. 'All in all I would say' this is great listening for a Gates fan and it is probably one for your collection.

Anyone who hasn't a David Gates or Bread CD in their collection and has suddenly become an admirer of his music can't go wrong with this new release. It contains his highly successful compositions recorded with the band 'Bread' between 1969-1973, 5 songs from solo albums and 5 brand new songs.
This is romantic balladry at it's very best with melodies & hooks to die for, beautifully arranged, sung and played with his renowned precision.
I was a little disappointed with the inclusion of the old hits which all his fans surely have now. Many people acquainted with his solo albums would know that he has consistently topped anything he wrote as 'Bread's hitmaker albeit without the same commercial success. This is again proven with his new single 'Find me' and 'Mirror Mirror', 2 of the 5 great new songs featured here and which all deserve to be remembered as classics along with songs like 'Make it with you', 'Guitar Man', 'If', 'Everything I own'and 'It don't matter to me'.
A superb collection from a true musical great!

I think there are too many "Bread classics" on here really. They are available on so many other discs. And on a "David Gates" disc it seems a bit odd - I know he wrote them, but wasn't Bread a group effort?
Strange too that there are no tracks at all from his excellent 1980 "Falling in Love Again" album.
Fans will be interested to hear the new tracks from David. "Mirror, Mirror" has had an outing some years ago in the live shows and is probably the best of the new songs. But none of them are particularly good, and the inclusion of so much outstanding material from the seventies only serves to highlight how unoriginal these new songs are. Most people will be unfamiliar with the rare "Take Me Now" album too, but the one track from this is nothing special.
On the whole, worthwhile, but it would have been much better to re-release "Never Let Her Go" and "Falling in Love Again" on CD.
My recommendation: unless you're a completist, buy a "Best of" Bread album and David's "First" solo album rather than this.

This album is one of the best I have ever heard!
From the early Bread songs to the present day new ones the melodies are just as tight. Lyrically, some of the new songs are as good if not better. This is one album that, if you are a fan you must add it to your collection. Outstanding!!!

I had never heard of David Gates until I accidentally heard him on Radio Bristol early one morning. I was instantly impressed by his rendition of 'Make it with you' and looked for a CD with this song on Amazon. I found this CD which was second hand but described as in very good condition for well under £2 including postage. As I was not familiar with the singer I thought this a good way to sample him. In the event the CD was indistinguishable from new and the singer more than fulfilled my expectations having a very melodious voice and with perfectly clear diction. I can heartily recommend the CD and the singer.

I bought this CD because one of the tracks, "Find Me" was played at a very close friend's funeral at his request. Beautiful words and extremely meaningful for the situation. The rest of the CD is a pleasant listen too.

I thoroughly recommend this album. I happened to hear the track "Find me" by chance at a funeral of a friend. It was chosen by his wife for the end of the service. I was so moved by the song that I immediately ordered the album and have not stopped playing it since......Absolutely fantastic, and enjoy every track. A real must have for anyone's collection.
