Another great book 22 May 2012
By Napasha
Format:Paperback
I had been waiting for this novel ever since I had read the first book in the serious and I was not disappointed. Great book, good story, very readably written. I literally flew through the pages. The main character develops and grows, which is lovely to see, as I like the character very much. cannot wait untilbook number three.

The only gripe I may have is not with the writing but with the cover. It does not seem to give the author the gravitas she deserves.

Second in the series (the first being The Poisonous Seed: A Frances Doughty Mystery), this is a worthy sequel in every way. With the character of Frances Doughty now no longer just a chemist's daughter, now she makes her fledgling steps into the role of Lady Detective. As we know the characters, the story gets off to a cracking start - and keeps up the pace throughout. Using her gender as a positive plus, we see her infiltrate a posh girls' school to uncover another extraordinarily well plotted case.

Again, Ms Stratmann shows she knows Victorian life and times inside out, as we get to experience life in what feels like an extremely real environment. Is it purely research? Surely the only rational explanation for all these intimate details is the author has a time machine tucked away in her attic. If not, I'm sure she will have boxes and boxes of ideas for further adventures. I for one cannot wait.

Linda Stratmann has done it again - created another entrancing picture of life in late 19th Century Bayswater, where you feel you are actually there, walking those streets alongside Frances as she settles into her new life as a Lady Detective and solves her first official case.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and have eagerly awaited this one. I was not disappointed and am looking forward to more of the series. Not only are the mysteries themselves well worth my time,as a reader, but the insights into the lives of the characters go a long way toward making these books more than *just* a mystery worth reading.

Long may Linda Stratmann (and, indeed, Frances Doughty) continue!
