This was a great book, the subject matter - a woman in turmoil and how she copes - was dealt with in a sensitive way and the horrors of a breakdown were not glamorised. Some of the scenes in school were very sad because they showed very accurately just how cruel children can be with their words and actions towards others. Kate Long has portrayed the goings on of a staff room very well and with good humour. Well worth a read!

I hope I'm not giving away too much in this review, but what a surprise this book was.
I started reading it thinking what a cow Anna was - having an affair with her brother-in-law, thinking the worst of everyone, working at a school with a headmaster she hates (why doesn't she just get out, I thought). But coping with everything - and she has some big things to cope with - has Anna in turmoil and her eventual breakdown is a riveting read. You just know that she's going to come out the other end a better person for it.

Kate Long's done it again with this book - written something I never wanted to end. Her attention to detail throughout is superb - the settings are vivid, the characters real. And her characterisation of teacher Anna as she suffers a breakdown is a masterpiece. It's a tricky and sensitive topic to tackle - a teacher becoming emotionally dependent on her pupil - but it's safe in Long's skilled hands. The ending is satisfying and hopeful. This is a book which deserves to do really well. Thoroughly recommended.
