Product Description

A supremely unlucky in love late twenty something living in London decides to leave the whole sorry business of dating behind – at least for a while.

Dating is a dangerous sport. So after her sixth successive failed relationship, romantically-challenged 20-something Sass decides she’s had enough.

The Dating Detox is born. No men, no break-ups, no problem.

The result? Her life – usually joyfully/traumatically occupied with dates, clothes and vodka – is finally easy. Chastity rocks. No wonder nuns are always singing. Everything falls at her feet. Especially men.

Will Sass break the rules? Why does fate keep throwing her in the path of the irritatingly amusing – and gorgeous – Jake? Will she ever roll the dice and play again? Or is a love-free life too good to risk losing?

For the post-Carrie Bradshaw, post-Bridget Jones, post-credit crunch generation of singles, life isn’t beautiful, a bitch, or a beach. It’s a party.

Chicklit detox 24 Oct 2011
By Trish23
Format:Paperback
My sister lent me this book when I was reeling from having read several dreadful chicklit novels. I won't name and shame them here but I was close to despairing of my favourite genre when I started The Dating Detox.
What a pleasant surprise. It had a likeable heroine in Sass who wasn't a moron, was able to manage her money, wore high street clothes and was pretty good at her job.
It had a warm, flirty, slow burning romance, a great cast of supporting characters and it was fun and romantic. I loved it.
After being dumped six times Sass has sworn off dating for three months and embarked on what she calls a 'dating sabatical' and early in the novel she relates the story of each doomed romance and it's ending. One of the things I really liked in this book was that the male characters weren't just the usual chicklit staples - the dull duds and the bastards. Sass has lots of male friends who are all portrayed as regular human beings with their own dating and relationship issues, some even demonstrating emotional maturity on more than one occasion. This means that Sass can't fall back on the usual chicklit heroine 'all men are bastards' whine about her string of disasters because she knows they aren't. There has to be more to it and it is interesting and fun to follow Sass as she gradually figures herself out and re-evaluates the relationships that have prompted her to steer clear of dating.

Gemma Burgess also manages to do what so many chicklit authors don't even realise they need to do - she makes us fall in love with the hero too, we feel the pull, we smile at the flirting, when he's 'off stage' we wonder when we'll see him again. This is so rare in chicklit now that I hardly realised how much I missed it until I felt it here and it makes a huge difference. Huge.
After all the 'is chicklit dead' furore of the last month I have to say that, while I had been starting to wonder, on the evidence of this novel - definitely not.

Quirky, funny and real. `The Dating Detox' offers a new and refreshing voice, taking `chic-lit' past Carrie Bradshaw and giving Bridget Jones a wink on the way. Sass is a strong character. She has flaws, she has strength, she has personality, she's straight talking, likeable and the kind of woman that I'd want as a friend. (That's important, isn't it?). I think that's why I'm so choosy about what I read from this genre (now that I'm in my 30s). I don't want to feel old, past it and out of touch with the modern woman. I want a main character that I `get' and one that has life experiences that I can understand.

Gemma Burgess connects reader to character, by creating Sass, an open-hearted and honest lead. And as Sass talks about her dating disasters and the `types' of men that she's `experienced', I found myself laughing out loud and nodding my head.

`The Dating Detox' is a book about female friendships, about solidarity and about personal growth. The writing feels effortless and has a warmth that will appeal to any lover of this genre, even more so to those who are slightly tired by repetitive rom-com stories. This anti-romantic comedy is refreshing and it's one that I've already recommended to several single girl friends.

After her sixth relationship in a row fails, Sass has finally enough from dating and getting dumped by guys. She wants no more heartache so she decides to start a dating detox. No dating and flirting is allowed for at least three months.
At first Sass wonders if the non-dating will really change her life however she soon realizes that without it she can finally concentrate on making smarter decisions. Soon she is happier than ever and even her job is finally everything she wished for.
But what will Sass do when the three months are up and a men, Jake, comes into her life who could be perfect for her? Will she be able to trust her feelings and give their relationship a chance?

"The Dating Detox" is a book that I enjoyed because on the one hand it's a hilarious chick-lit story that made me laugh a lot and on the other book it's about a woman who learns to trust into herself.
Sass is a very funny heroine and I loved the way she told her story. Especially when she was talking about her ex-boyfriends I had to laugh a lot. She was never mean in contrary had to learn to not always be a "pleaser" who thinks that she has to make others like her and who always thinks that she was at fault. I loved reading how she became stronger and how she learned to stand up for her own ideas and feelings. I also enjoyed reading about Sass's friends and that they went together though good and bad times.
The love story between Sass and Jake had time to develop. Their banters were very entertaining and one of my highlights of the book. I also enjoyed that the heroine had a good relationship with her parents because it's a nice change to the many heroines that had the most horrible childhood.
Throughout the story the heroine made some stupid decisions but I loved that she learned from them. There were also some situations that were a bit over the top (mainly with partying and alcohol) but it never was too much to not enjoy these scenes.
I already bought and started reading another book by Gemma Burgess because I want to read more of her engaging writing style, her likable characters and her hilarious story lines.

cover
It's ok, the way the woman is drawn looks a bit weird to me.

final appraisal
"The Dating Detox" is a book that made me laugh on nearly every page. The mix of hilarious scenes, great characters and the development of the heroine was just perfect and I'm happy that I found another awesome chick-lit book.

Fantastic
Gemma Burgess is in a class of her own when it comes to chick-lit. I had just about given up on the whole genre when I came across her delightful books. Highly recommend!
