4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly different and pleasantly imperfect 16 Aug 2012

This is a tricky book to review because not all of it works but this turns it into such a good read. Sometimes Davidson's style seems a bit too poetic - slightly tricky to follow, but I quickly got used to it and it proved to be the perfect antidote to those slick vampire stories that keep emerging.

Here we have a gorgeous female vampire, seducing men and women to feed off them to keep her strength up. But it's not sexy; she can make herself beautiful but really she is decaying and needs to find a mate - and soon. We have a puzzled police detective who has an intriguing relationship with his female deputy and an old man who is dragging his grandson round on London to work out the strange pattern of killings.

The plot evolves well and ends with a frantic build up pace and whilst you might guess part of the ending you probably won't guess it all.

Perhaps the best part of the book is that right up to the end you're not sure if you like the vampire character and if you want her to succeed.

It's strange, edgy and a bit disturbing. Read it and try something new!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first novel 7 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Vampire novels are not my first choice but, having read ths novel on recommendation from a friend, I found it to be surprisingly good... quite a page turner in fact. Nice characterisation, grim detail and a healthy degree of suspense. A strong first novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally gripping 7 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I am not always convinced by thrillers, but I enjoyed this one a lot - it's a real page-turner and I got totally immersed in it. The sex scenes are amazing and the last one is spectacular... very graphic, real-seeming and exciting.. despite the horrid backdrop, which is brilliantly described!
The structure and characterisation are great too, with just the right amount of characters and subplots. The one about the nephew works particularly well, you don't see where it is leading to until you get there but it is fascinating along the way!
Suspension of disbelief.. yes I actually believed it! Streets of London, great, very good policeman/reporter relationship... the whole thing needs to be made a film of, and I do hope that happens.
