I'm assuming you are familiar with H.P. Lovecraft and know the stories in this collection. If not, you won't be disappointed with the gothic tales if that takes your fancy.
I'm more interested in the execution. Wayne June has clearly been chosen to read the stories because of his deep, gravelly voice. But he has a very monotonous tone, lacking in energy. He seems chosen for the timbre of his voice rather than his ability to tell a story. As a contrast, I have some of the great actor Garrick O'Hagan's manic readings of Lovecraft on cassette, and his wild, frenzied ramblings make June's readings seem stilted and lifeless.
Lovecraft was trying to convey a glimpse of the madness that lies beyond our comfort zones, but I'm afraid that Wayne June's reading is just a little too pedestrian for the material. It's still good, and nowhere near as camp as O'Hagan, but I can't help but feel O'Hagan captures the essence of Lovecraft's manic insanity more authentically. June is going through the motions, whereas O'Hagan other is living the insanity and revelling in it. Mind you, Garrick O'Hagan's recordings are long out of production, and will certainly become classics over time. I'm hanging on to my cassettes, and would rather listen to them than this.
This version is recommended, all the same, if you don't have access to any better recordings. It's not perfect, but it is Lovecraft.
