Book Description

Feb 2009

A breathtaking novel of suspense from the co-author with James Patterson of five No 1 bestsellers including Judge and Jury and Lifeguard, and the hit thriller of 2007, The Blue Zone

GET UP. KISS YOUR FAMILY GOODBYE. GOT TO WORK. DIE…

They say bad luck comes in threes. But for Karen Friedman’s family, bad luck is just the beginning.

It starts with her husband Charlie’s investments going wrong and the sudden death of a family pet. Then one morning Charlie takes the train to work – straight into a lethal terrorist blast. For his widow Karen and their children, all that remains of Charlie is a shared past.

Or is it? When the Friedmans begin to receive terrifying threats Karen turns to Detective Ty Hauck for help. Hauck’s family fell apart too, after a tragic accident he still blames himself for. Now he’s determined to keep Karen’s safe. But Hauck doesn’t know about how people who investigate Charlie have a way of ending up dead…

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 20 Mar 2008
By Best Crime Books TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I first read Andrew Gross who co-wrote with James Patterson and loved the book. I then read the Blue Zone which I thoroughly enjoyed and decided to pre-order The Dark Tide. I was not dissapointed. The book tells the story of Charles and Karen Friedman who live a wonderful life in a wealthy suburb with their two children. Charles runs a successful Hedge Fund and all is well until he is killed in a bombing in Grand Central Station. Karen then discovers that her husband may not really be dead. Along with Ty Hauck a cop with the violent crimes unit they follow the leads they get about Karens husband Charles and his supposed death. The story is excellent and keeps you reading until the very last chapter. I think Andrew Gross is a fantastic author who clearly writes his own novels just as well as Patterson. I look forward to his next book with just as much anticipation. Well worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A perfectly acceptable, mindless holiday read 4 April 2011
By Julia Flyte TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is the kind of book you store away in a holiday house for a mindless vacation read. It's a perfectly acceptable thriller which reads like a cross between Harlan Coben and Joseph Finder. Nothing outstanding, one you'll forget shortly after you've finished it, but perfectly readable.

Charles Friedman is a hedge fund manager who is killed in a terrorist attack in New York City. His grieving wife Karen starts receiving threatening messages and realises that Charles had a secret life that she knew nothing about. Meanwhile local cop Ty Hauck is investigating a hit and run accident which happened on the same day as the terrorist attack. It appears that there is a connection between the death of the local youth and Charles Friedman.

Andrew Gross's writing style is very easy to read and skips along at a good pace, although he does tend to over-explain what everyone is thinking and feeling at every opportunity. Some of the writing is cringe-inducing (my favourite being the "throbbing" in Karen's womb which drives her wild during a sex scene). The storyline also unfolds without a great deal of suspense, without any significant twists and with zero plausibility. So why three stars? Because despite all these flaws, I enjoyed it. It held my interest, kept me turning the pages and didn't demand too much thought. A perfectly acceptable, mindless holiday read.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as blue zone 10 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
Throughly enjoyed Blue zone but like other reviewers i was let down by this novel. The first half was quite slow going and when you put it down it was hard to get back into it. However in the second half, the book picked up pace and it was much more enjoyable, I would definately read this novelist again but just hope he keeps some originality and doesn't get repetetive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic Andrew Gross 12 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bought the CD as travel 1hr to work each way. Normal fast moving Andrew Gross fare, not too taxing on the brain so just what I need when driving home and winding down after a hectic shift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Tide. 27 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Been off reading for a while and decided to buy a kindle. This was one of the first book I bought. What a good story again from Andrew Gross. Have read all his books with or without James Patterson. As always this story did not disappoint me. Kept me interested from start to finish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark Tide Chosen by my book club 20 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought the beginning was good, characters quite well drawn but as it progressed I felt there was too much emphasis on the relationship between Hauck and Karen. The ending was predictable but I quite enjoyed it though I would not recommend it to friends who were keen on gritty crime novels.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor! 19 Mar 2014
By jackie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found it difficult to get into the book right from the start. The characters were sketchy & unpleasant. The plot was very thin & it seemed as though the actions of the main protagonists (Karen & the detective) were made to fit & pad out the plot, no matter how ludicrous their actions were. I found little to like in the book, unfortunately, and only continued to read it to the end because it was a book club read & I felt obliged to do so.
