Product Description

The Dark Side of the Fylfot is set in mediaeval Saxony, in a time of pestilence and superstition, when the Church teaches that disease is the result of sin and people fear science as akin to black magic.

Gretl is a child when the Great Mortality – the Black Death – strikes Brunswick, and not all her grandfather Sano’s learning can protect the family from tragedy. And when Gretl becomes a victim of the bitter and lustful Akhtar, Sano must confront the past and his own guilt to heal her hurt.
The Black Death returns. Gretl and her father are determined to discover the cause and find a cure. To do so, they must confront ignorance, superstition and religious dogma. Not only that – still casting his malevolent eye on the family is Akhtar, intent on pursuing his mad, perverted ambition.
But who is Akhtar and what is the origin of the strange power he wields over people?
Will Gretl learn too late that all magic is in the mind?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating tale, worth reading again! 23 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I was hooked on this book and finished it in no time. I wish it had been longer but I didn't feel that anything had been missed out from the storyline. It's a magical and sometimes stark tale of good versus evil, creeping across Europe in the Middle Ages. The author brings to life the beliefs, customs and traditions of the time. Learning, reasoning, a balance of beliefs and science shine through and shed light in a superstitious world.

While the story moved through time and doubled back on itself, I still found it easy to follow as the characters were strong and clear. Clever links were made to draw different threads together and keep me intrigued.

You don't have to read the author's other books to enjoy this, but if you have, you can continue the journey of some of the main characters who have come to Europe from Persia. They appear in slightly altered guises to break some ties with their past. In this life their families, wealth and influence grow happily while dark undercurrents gain momentum, putting their happiness at risk.

The threats of plague, power in the wrong hands and what seems to be a 'real' Pied Piper in Hameln have been enthralling. I might just read it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining read 17 Mar 2013

I was a bit dubious at first - 14th century Saxony - would I really find this interesting? The answer was quite a resounding yes. The characters are well crafted and make you want to find out what happens in their lives, or indeed about their past. It really provides an interesting perspective to Europe at this time, and of course the Pied Piper legend too. This book really deserves more 5* reviews. Highly recommended. Go on, read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good piece of historical fiction. 12 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book as a gift last Christmas, the first time I've tried the author's work. I normally read historical fiction, but Scarrow and Iggulden; although different in style and protagonist types, this is just as enjoyable. Recently Oliver Potzsch books are being heavily promoted on Amazon, even with some questionable translations, according to a few reviewers...do yourself a favour and try this book and author instead.
