Amazon.co.uk Review

The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralysed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne.

In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuch

DVD Description

Be the envy of your friends or make someone's day with this Dark Knight Batmask two disc box set, exclusive to Amazon.co.uk.

Director Christopher Nolan (The Prestige) returns to Gotham City with this sequel to the critically-acclaimed fan favourite, Batman Begins.

In The Dark Knight, Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman, The Fifth Element) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart, No Reservations), Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organisations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal psychotic mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as the Joker (Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain). What ensues will blow your mind away. From its release on the big screen The Dark Knight has fast become one of the biggest grossing films world-wide.

Beware Packaging 11 Dec 2008
Format:DVD
I've given my rating for the actual film, again though, rather than review a film that's been reviewed to death already, I thought I should draw attention to the packaging issue. As mentioned by a couple of the other reviewers, this shipped in a standard jiffy bag, and as a result the card case arrived torn and damaged. Very disappointing, considering how easy it would have been to avoid.

Shame, because the actual 'Batmask' is fairly well made, sturdy, with a nice texture to the touch.

Disturbingly Dark 3 Mar 2009
Format:DVD
It is not often the case that the sequel is as good as, if not better than the original, but "The Dark Knight." is definitely a worthy successor to "Batman Begins". Words of warning though, pay attention to the certificate! Don't be one of those parents that let their eight-year-old watch this film and is then surprised that their child has nightmares. This is a very dark tale! Heath Ledger's well-deserved posthumous multiple awards, for his portrayal of The Joker, creates memorable and disturbing scenes, suggestive of deeply cruel violence; stealing every scene he is in. Christian Bale, as Batman, takes the story of our hero from triumph to tragedy; supported by excellent performances from Michael Cane and Morgan Freeman amongst others. But, of course, this is much more than intense drama. The special effects are stunning and the action will leave you breathless. The filmmakers have paid attention to every detail of the visuals and soundtrack to make this DVD worth watching many times over to pick up on everything that they achieved. If that is not enough for you, the second disk of features will probably give you all the information you could wish for about the making of the film. This two-disk release is well worth adding to your collection.

A classic for our time 21 April 2010

Christopher Nolan has given us what we always wanted, This icon of a movie blew me away, if you think it was too long, sorry, I disagree, I was hooked from opening to closing credits, Nolan continues his exploration and expansion of the batman character, and does so with devestatingly good effect, Heath Ledger (RIP) really gave his all for this and it is a crowning achievement for what would be his last full involvement in a movie.

The main point for me though was humanity( ferry scene) and how both citizen and criminal alike did not bow to the extreme pressure they were put under, and that they were willing to go the distance against the odds, so many lessons here for people to learn from.

Christian Bale's Batman also taking the brunt of what happens shows how Batman is capable of being the hero people want, whether or not it is good for his image, blah blah image!! he does it for the people of gotham,
On a final note stand up all involved with this film, and take a bow, you have earned it

All i want is a decent plot!!
The first batman was superb but this is just a poor action film. I just don't care about the characters. Jack Nicholson did a much better job.
