Product Description

Four young men come of age in a time of prophecy and war....

New York Times bestselling author Michael A. Stackpole is a recognized star of military fantasy. The Dark Glory War is a thrilling new tale set in a world threatened by an unstoppable foe....

In the sacred season of the Moon Month, four young men don the masks that herald their coming-of-age celebration, a time of testing, ritual, festival, and romance.

But for Tarrant Hawkins and his friends Leigh, Rounce, and Nay, their first test becomes a desperate struggle for survival. For they will encounter the vanguard of an invasion force poised to overrun their homeland of Oriosa, and all four will find their lives changed forever when they encounter a legendary weapon that brings its wielder invincibility. Yet the magic sword may prove more curse than blessing, signaling the arrival of a cataclysmic battle with ancient foes. And in the face of dire sorceries and terrible battles, these youths will come to manhood...or to death.

I found the book compelling from the start. Although usually I like to have backgrounds explained in more detail I did not feel that Stackpole's style of fast paced action detracted from my enjoyment of the novel. The characterisation was good for the main characters although the minor characters are a little underwritten. Stackpole is not a writer who fills in unnecessary back story and allows the action to speak for itself. The narrator of the story (Hawkins') assumes that the reader knows of some of the background and does not expound on it. This does not detract from the story but adds to it as you frantically turn pages to discover if the unanswered questions are answered (beware some are not - it is the first in a series after all!). I can not wait for the next one!

Great Read! 15 Mar 2004

The Dark Glory War is the first non Star Wars Stackpole book I've managed to get hold of because you only get imports of his other books which is a shame because he's one of my favourite authors. When I saw this book in a sci-fi shop I just had to get it and I'm glad I did. It's a bit remincisant of I, Jedi in that is is written in the first person and then a little like Ruin from the NJO series in that the hero of the book does all he can to save his friends and allies but when he gets back home he's treated like a traitor.
I have to agree that Stackpole could have written some of his other characters better but has it was written in the first person, it's difficult to write the story from the point of veiw of other characters.
I'm really looking forward to reading other books in the DragonCrown War.

A truly enjoyable read.

It built to a nice climactic ending, then unfortunately went on to a further two chapters which were designed to set up the next book I would have preferred to see then actually in the next book, but it did not spoil my enjoyment.

Having said that I still enjoyed it enormously. The battles and fight seens were vivid and well described. The characters believable and the magic not completely overpowering so normal people could still have an influence.

Very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings in plot structure.
