In a last-ditch attempt to salvage her family, tough New Yorker, Adelle (Maria Bello) takes her daughter Sarah (Sophie Stuckey) to coastal Wales to visit her estranged husband James (Sean Bean). But the idyllic dream soon turns to a hellish nightmare when, during an innocent trip to the beach, Sarah is swept under the waves - her body un-recovered. While a frantic James desperately searches for Sarah, Adelle is haunted by mysterious visions and clues - hinting that Sarah is trapped somewhere in the house. What's more, Adelle learns of a horrific, wicked event that happened at this site: decades ago a pagan religious colony, under the instruction of their leader, jumped to their deaths over a nearby cliff, and only one survived - Daffyd the local farmer and handyman. Through Daffyd, Adelle learns of a mythical underworld, "The Dark", an ethereal land of the dead, where one of the dead can be exchanged for one of the living. When Adelle finds a traumatised girl Ebrill (Abigail Stone) in Sarah's bed, she soon makes the deadly connection between Sarah, Ebrill and "The Dark": how far will Adelle go to get Sarah back?

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
I approached this film with some trepidation, after reading so many negative reviews of it. I need'nt have worried, as its a little gem.
The story concerns a mother and daughter(Maria Bello and Sophie Stuckley) who have travelled to Wales from America to visit the father of the child,James, played by the excellent Sean Bean. There is also a farmer who works on James's land who tells of old Welsh myths and legends, of the Welsh Otherworld called Annwn, and how fifty years ago a preacher led his congregation in a mass suicide off the cliff edge.
Soon after, the child Sarah dissapears, and is presumed drowned, only for the mother to start seeing glimpses of a child around the house, not her daughter but a strange child called Ebril, who claims to know the whereabouts of the missing child
There are elements of lots of other films present here, The Ring, The Others, The Orphanage, but this film still feels fresh and can chill on occasion. Abigail Stone, a young Welsh actress is excellent as the mysterious Ebril, playing the parents off against eachother, and there is excellent support from Maurice Roeves as the secretive farmer Dafydd.
All in all, an excellent little chiller, well worth watching, and deserving of wider recognition.

Those crazy sheep...! 27 April 2010
Format:DVD
Adelle (Maria Bello) and her daughter, Sarah (Sophie Stuckey) visit James (Sean Bean) on the Welsh coast. When Sarah is presumed drowned, Adelle does not give up the fight to find her daughter alive......and who is the strange girl, Ebril (Abigail Stone) who suddenly appears...?

The story is a scary one with an original plot, if a little complicated at times, especially near the end. But the story will scare you if you are wanting to be scared. You won't guess the end as there are several twists and just when you think it's all over......it's not.......and then it's still not......and then again.... It's definitely one to watch again. Not sure about the effectiveness of sheep as a scary animal form, though. There are a few loose ends that are left unresolved but so what.

I would highly recommend this film. Its well filmed, performances are great, and the suspense and scare factor is really high! There were plenty of moments when i jumped out of my seat - particularly toward the build up at the ending.

It will be compared to the 'grudge' etc because of the young ghostly girl, but this shouldn't be dismissed as just another horror film, its unique and highly enjoyable.

Sinister Sheep
Fails to convince on every level. So tedious as to be unwatchable. NB 'British' and 'horror' do not seem to go together at all well.
