I approached this film with some trepidation, after reading so many negative reviews of it. I need'nt have worried, as its a little gem.
The story concerns a mother and daughter(Maria Bello and Sophie Stuckley) who have travelled to Wales from America to visit the father of the child,James, played by the excellent Sean Bean. There is also a farmer who works on James's land who tells of old Welsh myths and legends, of the Welsh Otherworld called Annwn, and how fifty years ago a preacher led his congregation in a mass suicide off the cliff edge.
Soon after, the child Sarah dissapears, and is presumed drowned, only for the mother to start seeing glimpses of a child around the house, not her daughter but a strange child called Ebril, who claims to know the whereabouts of the missing child
There are elements of lots of other films present here, The Ring, The Others, The Orphanage, but this film still feels fresh and can chill on occasion. Abigail Stone, a young Welsh actress is excellent as the mysterious Ebril, playing the parents off against eachother, and there is excellent support from Maurice Roeves as the secretive farmer Dafydd.
All in all, an excellent little chiller, well worth watching, and deserving of wider recognition.
