This is a bumper collection and the bonus is the documentary. First off, the documentary is clearly made by someone who has a great interest in the studios, the films made there and the technicians, writers and actors who worked upon them. This is a fascinating documentary that runs for some 2 hours and comprises interviews, film clips and rare footage such as colour film of the studios themselves shot by Francis Matthews at the time he was making a film for the Danzigers. There are many amusing anecdotes and memories of names perhaps long forgotten to many but for the film buff this is a must have. Above all the documentary dispels the myths about both filming standards and working at the Danziger studios.
Brian Cobby the male star of The Nudist Story recounts his audition for the part and Trader Faulkner tells of playing about 9 different roles within the television series Richard the Lion heart. Sheila Whittingham tells of her meeting with Harry Danziger at the Mayfair Hotel at a time when she was resting and working as hotel staff and this led on to many roles including playing opposite Dermot Walsh. Brian Clemens has much to thank the Danzigers for and lets us into their soft side and the start they gave him to a long career writing for film and television. There are many more but you will only get a real feel for the experience of working for the Danzigers by buying and watching this documentary. Assistant Director Geoffrey Helman recalls his time at the studios with affection and actor Geoffrey Bayldon recalls an audition that really wasn't but he still got a job.
It does not cover everything and if I had wanted more detail it would have been about the long running Mark Saber series and the reason why the studios closed so suddenly but apart from that this is still a "must have" film covering a forgotten part of British film making.
The films within the box set are the well respected Tell-Tale Heart (1960); Laurence Payne, Adrienne Corri, Dermot Walsh & Selma Vaz Dias. Director Ernest Morris. Long awaited release in region 2 DVD. Plus the already released by Pegasus, Part-Time Wife (1961); Anton Rodgers, Nyree Dawn Porter & Kenneth J Warren. Director Max Varnel. The Battleaxe (1962); Francis Matthews, Jill Ireland & Joan Haythorne. Director Godfrey Grayson. Fate Takes a Hand (1961); Ronald Howard & Christina Gregg. Director Max Varnel. Two Wives at One Wedding (1960); Gordon Jackson, Christina Gregg & Lisa Daniely. Director Montgomery Tully.
A bargain at the price and I would have paid the price for just the documentary and so to have all 5 films and a documentary is a bonus whichever way you look at it.
