After using Rod Heikell's excellent pilot books, this Danube guide is a big disappointment. It is not the fault of the writer, but the time. It has been almost 20 years since it was written, what is very much for a book purchased by readers who are planning trip on this great river. Very few practical advices, most of them useless. Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria is in the EU, Yugoslavia is not on the map any more, it can not be up to date. If you look for a practical guide for a Danube trip do not waste money for it. On the Danube River cruise - last year, lots of other passengers wished that they had purchased this book. I still refer to while sorting out many photographs. Excellent value.

A great read, especially relevant whilst travelling up the Danube from Budapest to the Rhine-Main-Danube link.
This required reading the sections in reverse, which was tiresome, as the author made his epic journey [before the Iron Curtain came down] going downstream. Nevertheless a most enjoyable and informative account.
