Review

A true one-sitting reading, this is charmingly ridiculous and ridiculously charming. (The Daily Telegraph )

Product Description

Venice, 1756. One of the city's brightest young actors has been brutally murdered: nailed to a cross in the theatre where he was due to perform, with his eyes put out, and lines of Latin verse carved onto his chest. The Doge, aware the city is full of enemies of the Republic, launches a secret investigation, led by Pietro Viravolta, a dashing young adventurer, and seducer (the best friend of Casanova), who currently awaits execution in the prison beneath the Bridge of Sighs. Viravolta is released, on the proviso that he will neither escape the city, nor pursue the great love of his life, Anna, the married woman whose husband was responsible for Viravolta's incarceration. His investigations lead him to Luciana, the beautiful mistress of a Venetian senator, to Spadetti, the master glass-maker of Murano, and to Caffelli, the tormented priest of San Giorgo Maggiore. Murder follows murder, each more gruesome than the last, and as Viravolta begins to draw the connections between these deaths, and the torments reserved for sinners in each of Dante's circles of hell, he finds himself embroiled in a terrible game of cat and mouse. As the streets of Venice fill with masked Carnival-goers, and as Anna and Viravolta are once again thrown together, he is drawn further into the inferno, to the heart of a secret sect and a plot to bring about the downfall of the city.

A great read. 19 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
This was one of those occasions when I stumbled upon a new writer (to me)in a bookshop and I'm really pleased that I did. Style wise it reminded me of the superb 'The Historian,' and if you like a many layered book with real effort made to get the background detail in place and to allow the plot to be crafted so that the central characters are there with you; then give this book a try. It requires attention, it asks questions, it is a fine blend of thriller and mystery. The main hero 'The Black Orchid' is something of the 'special agent' and the satanic overtones and 'Dante' killings leads to an exciting thriller.

In one word - fantastic! Welcome to Venice in 1756. Horrific murders are about to happen and the best person to solve the crime is Pietro Viravolta who is also known as the Black Orchid and currently awaiting execution in prison. Bring in to the mix Pietro's best friend Casanova and you have two people determined to prevent their own deaths by solving those of others.

It's a good mix of history and crime and linked to `The Historian' and `Labyrinth' neither of which I have yet read and therefore unable to comment on. It will take you a little time to get into the book; I stopped trying to pronounce names etc and just enjoyed the fabulous narrative. The description is amazing and as the crimes unfold you are treated to the wonderful world of Dante - a big plus for me!

I can't recommend this book enough and I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

I enjoy reading whodunnits set in Italy, well anything set in Italy, really, and this looked a good read, but isn't.
There are numerous grammatical, spelling and plot errors in it, and I find myself continually looking out for the next mistake.
I am not sure if this is bad editing, or bad translating or a combination of both, but it is painful to read.

I have given it 2 stars as it gives a good Italian feel and I like the setting, but I am struggling to finish it.
