Product Description

Liberty Market Ltd is a firm that provides a very specialized service. To people at risk, they advise on how best not to be kidnapped. If a kidnap has already taken place, they help out with negotiations, endeavoring to get the victim back alive for the least possible cost. When Alessia Cenci, 23-year-old champion girl jockey, is grabbed in Bologna, Liberty Market Ltd sends in their agent Andrew Douglas to secure her release. For Andrew, the bungling of the Italian police is only the first in a chain of catastrophic events he can't control.

Greatly different! 15 July 2004
Format:Paperback
Since I started travelling for my job I've been reading Francis in English. The Danger is unlike any others I've read so far. Usually the main character is confronted with some crime and starts an investigation. Not this time, he is just doing his job. And also the lovestory is totally different now. If you like Francis, you'll love this one!

As well as having a typically exciting and suspenseful plot, this is possibly the most emotionally engaging Francis novel I have ever read. The scenes involving a toddler who has been emotionally damaged by a frightening kidnap experience are particularly moving... if you have a child of your own, make sure you have tissues to hand! But this is a well plotted and original thriller, and I will definitely be reading it again.

By H. Beentje TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The book: Andrew Douglas is a partner in Liberty Market Ltd, who advise people how not to get kidnapped; or if they do (get), Liberty partners negotiate with the kidnappers. As the book starts Andrew is working in Bologna, where a top jockey has been with her kidnappers for over five weeks. The first ransom payment fails, when the police gets carried away (I am not spoiling much - this is all in the first three pages!); the rest - well, read it yourself! It is difficult to summarize the rest without spoiling the plot, so I won't.

The author: Dick Francis was a Welsh jockey and writer of more than 40 thrillers. The Danger (1983) was his twenty-second thriller.

My opinion: one of the very best of Francis' middle period. In this period he writes about specialists in often somewat obscure or niche professions; in this case, the specialism (kidnap retrieval) intersects with horse racing. The book starts explosively and the tension rarely lets up - or if it does, there is something else to occupy our interest. It is a real scorcher with good characterization, pace, heartstrings being pulled; it is a book written by a craftsman at the top of his powers, spare and honed. But Francis is also an artist in that he breathes emotion and real life into the story, taking his audience 9pardon the pun) along for the ride - and leaving you with memorable scenes. One of his best - which is saying something!
