Once again the Mellstock Band bring us more recordings of songs that are associated with the times of the writer Thomas Hardy. This is a welcome addition since we get a new selection of Traditional English Folk music that was typical with rural Village bands around the 18th and 19th Centuries. This recording was made by Beautiful Jo records and was recorded in 1999. There were two previous albums with a simular theme recorded by Saydisc records but this recording continues the theme.
It is a good selection of songs and some music tracks are sandwiched by a brief "spoken word" track that give a poetic atmosphere to the programme. These brief tracks are words by Thomas Hardy and William Barnes read with a Dorset dialect.
These songs are varied in their source of collector, and also in the source of use. Some pieces were West Gallery music, some are Village band music. Some are from the oral tradition and all reflect a bygone age of their origin.
The Mellstock Band have been dedicated to this genre of music. They took their name from the fictional name that Thomas Hardy gave his home parish of Stinsford in Dorset. He called it Mellstock. The Mellstock Band play Music of Hardy`s Wessex and here on this recording we once again get authentic istruments such as the Clarinet, English military Serpent, Oboe, Concertina, fiddle, cello, bass drum and side drum and of course vocals.
The perfomance is bright, crisp and enthusiastic.
The tunes range from mysterious such as the "Major Malley`s Reel" to the haunting "foggy dew". There is a west gallery psalm tune and many instrumental tunes.
I Highly recommended this recording and also recommend

I was looking for a taste of traditional Country Folk as played by villagers in times past. i would not consider myself an expert or, indeed, a peson who knows much about folk music. BUT as the saying goes, I know what i like, and i like this CD. Give it a listen to on Amazon and make your own mind up...

We brought this album originally to hear some of the music of Jingy Wells my Great Grand father (Harvest home and wait for the wagon). Instead we now own a beautiful album which is played in its entirety on a regular basis
