Great insider tips on where to go. 7 Aug. 2010
By Nevis Rik - Published on
Format: Paperback
This is a very well-written guide book filled with plenty of detailed information. It covers all the big tourist spots, of course, but also some unique places that we would never have found by ourselves. You can read about the parks, trail, events, museums, lodging, you really know what to expect and can decide where to spend your time. The writing seems to be very unbiased, too, so we realized it wasn't just the local tourist bureau trying to sell us something.

Nothing unique here 14 Mar. 2011

I ordered this guide book with great expectations because of the title. However, there is nothing in this book that is not in every other South or North Dakota travel guide or on any good travel website. Very disappointed!

Nothing You Can't Find Online For Free 27 Nov. 2014
By Kimberly J. Clower - Published on

So, there aren't many options for travel books to the Dakotas. I am a fan of Frommer's with occasional use of Fodor's when necessary, but neither of those brands cover the Dakotas (hope that isn't a sign for my upcoming summer vacation). When I ordered this I understood from other reviews that this was pretty much going to cover the standard tourist spots and not so much the "off the beaten path" spots as advertised in the title. I would have to agree, I had already done online research on all the places I was looking to go and there wasn't much that was new to me in this book.

What I was hoping for more of were things like ratings and recommendations in an easy to read format. There was some restaurant and hotel guide information, but it did not include ratings or costs. I would have liked a little different organization - similar to what I am used to with other travel books. While the chapters were broken into various areas of the states, the text within each chapter pretty much ran continuously with the places of interest in bold. I would have much preferred each point of interest as it's own heading with a description of what it was about, the age appropriateness of point of interest, cost, time period it was open, and a rating.

Perhaps the book will come in useful when I am on my vacation, as I always like to have an offline guide with me just in case, but so far, I think TripAdvisor or free info from the Office of Tourism will get you to the same place as this book and you can save some money.

We buy an 'Off the beaten path' book for just about every destination. Stay away from the big cities and popular destinations and see what is really out there.
