Product Description

Book Description

Another heart-warming novel from the Queen of Romance.

Product Description

Twistleton is a village untouched by time, taking its rhythms from the countryside around. Daisy, Jean, Freddie and their friends Aurelia and Laura are devoted to the place, so that when war breaks out Twistleton becomes the embodiment of everything for which they are fighting. For the previous generation the new conflict causes private despair, increased when Twistleton is requisitioned by the Army. Turfed out of their houses, the villagers take refuge at the Hall.

It is here that evacuees from the East End, butler and countryman weld together to fight common enemies, whether drunken troops in the village, the bombs from the air, or rationing and the bitter weather.

Many of the women are forced to leave Twistleton to work in factories or hospitals, but whether walking behind a plough or nursing some injured airman, they all know only victory will do. With death haunting their every moment, love is their one all-too-fleeting consolation - and also their final triumph.

Disappointing 3 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
I was really looking forward to getting the latest Charlotte Bingham book from the library, as I have read and enjoyed all her previous novels, of which there are many. The story starts just before the second world war,and on through the war in Britain which I usually enjoy reading about. Not this one though, after about 100 pages I still hadn't got into the story. The characters were weak & the story line poor. Didn't get to know the characters and the events seemed to be skimmed over very quickly. Such a different style of writing that it didn't seem like the same author. Get the feeling that it was written in a hurry to appease the publishers. Such a shame.
I am now re-reading Daughters of Eden (2004).[[ASIN:0553815911 Daughters of Eden]and immediately from page one I am totally engaged and know that I will not want it to end.

The Daisy Club 20 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
I have read all of Charlotte Binghams books & I am afraid I was disapointed with this, her latest book. Her characters were weak & the story line very poor. It was pure makebelieve & not authentic. Did she really write this book?

un-inspiring 15 May 2011

I have listened to one or two other books by this author and have yet to find one that I can get into. I didnt find any of the main characters with whom I can identify. They all come from priveledged backgrounds however their circumstances are written to appear they disadvantaged. None of the characters are "finished" but neither have they sound back stories to encourage you to empathise with them and the tragedies in their lives are almost glossed over. Sorry, not one to recommend.
