The Daisy Chain is the perfect book to curl up with by the fire as autumn arrives. It isn't romantic in the sense of escapist, although there are lovely lush descriptions of the texture of life in a fairly comfortable tax bracket. Suzy, heroine and artist, is gradually becoming disillusioned with her husk of a marriage to Stephen. He's maybe almost too dislikeable but I think the account of the end of their affair, in particular the way Suzy reassesses their life together after discovering something mean he did in the past, is very well done. Money, as Campbell shows, often represents something else. Max is the hardcore romance, Suzy's original love, married to somebody else, but constantly on Suzy's mind. A novel for grown-ups, with a truly romantic ending you feel you've earnt!
