Review

A stunning debut that gripped me from first page to last. A thriller of a thriller! (Tess Gerritsen )

An engrossing account of a deviously motivated psychopathic serial killer (Booklist )

Packs a terrific punch and comes complete with pace and panache . . . Hayman doesn't write for the faint-hearted . . . Taut, deft and with a delicate sense of place, this is supremely accomplished storytelling (Daily Mail )

Product Description

Someone is stealing the hearts of beautiful women . . .

Portland, Maine. A missing high-school athlete's mutilated body is found in a scrap metal yard. Her heart has been surgically removed. The same day a young businesswoman is abducted . . .

Former NYPD detective Michael McCabe believes both crimes are the work of one man. A killer with surgical expertise who is targeting young women. Now McCabe and his team face a race against time to rescue the missing woman and unmask this sadistic killer - before it is too late.

The Cutting is one of the scariest debuts of the year. And the first in a great new series.

A Solid Debut 22 Jan 2011
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is James Hayman's first novel and it is quite a good read. Instead of trying to go out and be all clever (which only works sometimes), Hayman has instead produced a sold medical thriller/ police procedural, with good characterisation and a believable plot.

Michael McCabe, a detective formerly with the NYPD has moved with his daughter to Portland, Maine to work there. When a young athletic girl goes missing he and his colleagues eventually find the body, but the young girl has had her heart removed quite professionally looking. With what looks as perhaps another serial killer novel you soon find this isn't, when McCabe has another theory. With the disappearance of another athletic woman McCabe and his team know that they have about a week before this body will turn up dead.

With lots of action, a sinister plot and good characters there is more than enough to keep even the jaded reader interested. If you like your tales with a bit of mystery then you will be disappointed, as the mystery element isn't here, as it is easy for the reader to see what is ultimately going on. With this in mind then, you have been warned. This is a well written 'by the numbers' story that you can relax to, and I must admit is difficult to put down.

Enjoyable read 22 Aug 2011
By Foxboy

I really got into this book; I could relate to the hero and the villains. The characters were well drawn and the detail of the investigations seemed very plausible.
The only reason for the 4 stars is the thin plot. It was pretty obvious from early on who was doing the dastardly deeds and the ending was somewhat clichéd.
However, as I say, it was a good read for a début novel and I shall certainly buy others by this author, hoping he makes the plots a little more devious.

A solid novel 18 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
"The Cutting" is not a try to reinvent the whole genre, but it is a solid novel. The story is well-written, and most of the caracters are likeable. Mc Cabe does not differ from any other inspector aside from having an encyclopaedic recall, but he is still a good hero.
