This is a simply brilliant collection. Obviously it has lots of Curtis & the Impressions on it (which is no bad thing) but it is much wider than this. It will have loads of people that you will have not heard of on it but the excellent 48 booklet gives lots of information on each track and gives hours of reading as you listen. It has a number of tracks on that I loved but had gone off my radar - the Flirtations "Girls are out to get you" has been played endlessly. Holly Maxwell "Suffer" & Jesse Anderson "I got a problem" are new to me but are great tracks. There are hidden gems on each of the CDs. In fact the whole of the first of the 3 CDs "Windy City Mixture " is probably worth the price of the set on its own.

If you love soul music in its various styles you will love this box set and need to buy it.

Some hits, some misses, but good overall 30 May 2007

As a fanatic of both Curtis Mayfield and obscure R&B, I eagerly anticipated this. It came last week and here's the verdict.

Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) was a grossly underrated genius of Soul who was not only to Soul what Bob Dylan was to folk rock, but also attemtpted to be Chicago's Berry Gordy with his Curtom label.

Lots of good stuff here scattered among 3 Cds. The Five Stairteps (precursors to the J-5) have a number of their tunes here that are hard to find on CD, such as "I'm The One Who Loves You," "Stay Close to Me," and the lovely "Behind Curtains." A young Donny Hathaway is represented by a tune with the Mayfield singers and a 1969 duet with June Conquest (who alas didn't live up to her name when it came to the music industry). Baby Huey and the Babysitters really get things funked up with "Mighty Mighty Children." And Curtis and his Impressions are also well represented by the lovely and little known "Seven Years" as well as the bigger hits "Choice of Colors" and "This is My Country."

Can't discuss this set without mentioning Mavis Staples' underrated PIECE OF THE ACTION. This song has a soft spot in the hearts of those who saw the Cosby/Poitier film of the same name and the dance sequence that this song energized.

Of course in a set this vast, there are bound to be few clunkers, but since this is the CD age, you can easily skip over these and enjoy what's good here.

This CD is a testament as to why corporate radio needs to go. There is TOO MUCH good stuff that is not exposed to the masses. Enjoy.

For those of you who are famliar with the work of Curtis Mayfield with the Impressions, Gladys Knight (Claudine) Mavis Staples(Lets Do It Again) then lets get ready to Rumble! I got a secret to tell you about a box set of hidden and forgotten gems that you must hear !

This three cd set brings out the Curtis Mayfield that many folks outside of Chicago and the Midwest really don't know about. This set is pure Chicago Soul. Included in this primo offering are sets by the 5 Stairsteps, Gene (Duke of Earl) Chandler, The Notations, Major Lance, Natural Four and Leroy Hutson.

You also have early tracks by Donny Hathaway, June Conquest, Linda Clifford and The Jones Girls. This is not some obscure throw away set of newly recorded versions of old songs but the seemingly entire history of Chicago Soul wrapped up in one of the best compiled box sets I ever bought. Starting in the late sixties and moving on until about 1980, this is without a doubt one of the best examples and accounts of Chicago Soul and black radio during that period.

Hail, Hail Curtis, the gangs all here.......ooops did I mention that also appearing are Rasputins Stash, The Stridells,Fred Wesly and Ed (Lets get It On )Townsend. This set is a bona-fide treat. The Curtom Story: We're a Winner I dont normally recommend box sets but when I do.............
