Biography

For about a year back in the 1970s the Mekons epitomized the risks,
extremes and ludicrous promise of punk rock. It was a different time
f’sure BUT eerily similar to NOW. For a while back THEN the Mekons were
indeed very interested in punk rock but it wore off (for reasons too
obvious & well documented to dwell on here). After the huge success of
their FAST PRODUCT 45s ... Read more in Amazon's The Mekons Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Striking! 3 April 2008
By Sigrid
Format:Audio CD
Being The Mekons, joyfully addicted to experiment, not every track works, but quite enough do to make this a very fine album.

Some lovely songs, making the most of Sally Timms' clear vocals (Secrets, Brutal...) and some great political tracks (Brutal again - what a fine number, Authority...) and tracks that are just plain good fun (The Curse, 100% Song).

If you know the Mekons, for me this is one of their better albums and if you are new to them this would not be a bad place to start, although 'So Good it Hurts' might be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their record company was the real Curse of the Mekons 4 Jun 2000
By Nally - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Mekons have never been shy about showing their influences, nor of mixing potent cocktails out of various musical ingredients. I have to admit that I haven't always been wild about the results. However, on "The Curse of the Mekons" and "Rock and Roll", the band came up with its most successful blends to date, mixing rock and roll sensibility with a variety of traditional influences. But it's not the blurring of genre lines which makes these two albums such lasting treasures, it's the totality of the performance. For once (or twice, rather) all of the trademark Mekons ingredients gel and voila, the world is gifted with two brilliant albums featuring great songwriting, wonderful use of fiddle and other "non-rock" instrumentation, and And AND Sally Timms' heavenly vocals.
Which is what makes it such a crying shame that copies of the band's two classic albums only occasionally wind up on the racks of America's record stores. Problems with the label they were on at the time (A&M?) and its lackluster support for the band mean that unless one is extremely fortunate, import orders are generally the only way to obtain these albums in the USA.
Do yourself a favor, though, and don't settle for what's currently available in the domestic catalog. Spend the extra couple of bucks for the import of "Curse.." or "Rock and Roll" and treat yourself to the band's best work.
5.0 out of 5 stars finest example of the Mekons creativity 14 Nov 1998
By David W. Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Curse of the Mekons is(along with Rock'n'Roll)the best example of the Mekons ingenuity. Mixing elements of country, punk(I use the term loosely), rock'n'roll, and a little horror, this album delivers the most unique songs I have ever heard. Most notable are "Blue Arse", "100%Song", + "Waltz". This is not for the easy-hook crowd. This is for those who like a touch of the bizzare and (strangely)lucid from some of the funniest people on the planet. I could go on and on about it but that (as has been said) would be like dancing about architecture.
