Review

'As soon as I saw the title and the front cover of this book, I knew I would love it! It was a nice easy read, but very descriptive, it grabbed my attention immediately.' -- Megan Whiteman, age 10, Education Otherwise 'The marvellous inventiveness of Otfried Preussler receives an overdue revival with Curse of the Darkling Mill. This is a mysterious, fearful tale of evil doing and death threatening to engulf 14-year-old Krabat.' -- The School Librarian, Spring 2001

Product Description

Secret Arts. Unexplained deaths. What is happening at the mill in the fens? Drawn by powers beyond his control, fourteen-year-old Krabat finds himself apprenticed to the dark mill and begins work with the Miller's eleven other journeymen. But strange things continue to happen at the mill. Time passes at an unnatural pace, and the journeymen have superhuman powers, and can turn themselves into ravens and other creatures. Trapped by an evil power which makes escape impossible, Krabat is forced to submit to the Master of the Mill as he tries to unravel the mill's secrets. "The Curse of the Darkling Mill" is an eerie tale of sorcery and nightmares, which will keep you guessing right to the end.

The Satanic Mill 7 May 2007
By I. Tait
An amazing book. I read this when I was about 12 years old and loved it. On trying to find it just now (I couldn't remember the name or author), I found out that it's also called The Satanic Mill, which I think is worth noting, in case you can't find it as The Curse of the Darkling Mill.

This is a wonderful book by a German author. I had read this book when I was about 10, I was born in South Korea, and this book was translated into Korean and was published.

The Curse of Darkling Mill is a great book about black magic school, death, hope, friendship, slavery and myth. Its original title in german is 'Krabat'. It's the main character's name.

Ideal book for children *and* adults. The content and subject is mature than 'Harry Potter' series. Otfried Preussler is a very famous German author, he mainly writes books for children.

Translator is Anthea Bell. She is a very talented translator and I want to read her other translated books.

:) Best book I have ever read about black magic school and old German society.

The moment I started to read this book I couldn't put it down. I had finished it in 1 hour flat, that's how enjoyable I personally thought it was. It had all the elements of a good horror story interwoven with pathos and a bit of a love story, also the 'good over evil' story line wasn't mawkish but tied in well.

I don't think anyone would be in doubt as to who the Miller was in alliance with although it was never overtly mentioned.
