No doubt because I am such fabulously entertaining company, I have been invited to tag along with some friends on their week's holiday to Somerset at the end of July. Well, technically speaking, I suppose you could say I invited myself... but nobody argued with me. Proof, I guess, that my friends have an awful lot more dignity than I do. Which is hardly surprising, given that the last time I remember having any dignity at all was on my wedding night, in those last few seconds of coherent thought before I reluctantly became separated from my underpants.

Having offered my services as an invaluable exponent of facts and stories related to Somerset, yet having never previously gone anywhere near the place, it struck me as a very good idea indeed to send for books on that subject, from whose pages I could shamelessly steal material of sufficient interest. And, I have to say, I have well and truly struck storytelling gold with 'The A-Z of Curious Somerset'.

I was already the proud owner of its 'Curious Essex' stablemate, so I thought I knew roughly what I could expect from Geoffrey Body's 160ish pages: but this book far, far exceeded my expectations. The only negative thing I can say about it is that it doesn't include a map - in the capable hands of which a stranger to Somerset's shores might have been able to get their bearings. I know it's as easy as anything to go and grab an atlas off the shelf or to dial up a map on the internet but it's the principle of the thing. Being an 'A-Z' affair, it really is impossible to get a feel for where the hell these places are in relation to one another. Especially when the 'A-Z' side of things is an alphabetical order of individual story titles, rather than actual geographical locations.
