Amazon.co.uk Review

The beautiful game is getting ugly

The Cup is a riotously funny fly-on-the-wall style drama series following the bizarre behaviour and desperate antics of the parents of The Ashes, a kid’s football team. They play mean and dirty, determined to find success at any cost. It’s just as well for these parents that the boys – and girl – of under 11 football team Ashburn United, are much more level-headed.

Terry McConnell is prepared to stop at nothing in fulfilling his dreams for his son Malky, the Ashes' star scorer – if only the boy wasn’t more interested in wearing the black and white check outfit of Gordon Ramsey than the black and white strip of Bolton Wanderers. And the other parents aren’t much better. Dr Kaskar is determined his son won’t be ousted by Terry’s antics; funeral director Sandra sponsors the team just to give her football mad daughter a chance; Debbie plays the field in her search for a step-father for her young son while Terry’s wife is banking everything on a marriage-saving weekend at the finals.

Will Malky be signed up by Bolton Wanderers? Is the dishy new French coach the answer to the teams (and wives) problems? And just how much longer can the team, the coach – and his wife – put up with Terry?

5.0 out of 5 stars Back of the Net for The Cup !!!!, 28 Sep 2008
This review is from: The Cup [DVD] (DVD)
Just watched the 6 part series on BBC2 - great fun and I can't wait for the extras that will be included with DVD.
Best charcaters by far are Terry (Steve Edge) and his culinary son Malky (Ceallach Spellman)but the whole cast is very good with loads of very funny moments and one - liners.
Anybody who has ever been involved in competitive kids sport will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its good... Because I'm in it!, 16 July 2011
This review is from: The Cup [DVD] (DVD)
It is a good kids football 'documentary'. Extra features are a bit fiddly, but I bought it as a memento for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Gem, 29 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Cup [DVD] (DVD)
This is a fantastic 'fly-on-the-wall' comedy/drama in the style of The Office, but faster and for me at least, being a football fan, much funnier. This was originally shown on BBC from 21st August to 25th September 2008.

Terry McConnell (Steve Edge) will stop at nothing to get his son Malky (Ceallach Spellman) watched by the scout of Bolton Wanderers whilst playing for Ashburn United U11s. His long suffering wife, Janice is wonderfully acted by Jennifer Hennessy. Excellent support from Tanya Franks and Dominic Coleman as Sandra and Vincent Farrell the team sponsors........ and funeral directors. The rest of the cast all play their parts to perfection as well.

DVD includes:

* Extended Scenes
* Deleted Scenes
* Audio Commentaries
* Character Extras
* Making of Featurette
* Outtakes

16:9 widescreen, Dolby Digital Stereo, and English Subtitles for the Hard of Hearing. Running time for the six episodes is actually 175 mins and not 147 as listed here by Amazon.

Also on the 2 DVD set there is an Alternate Ending Easter Egg, and a really funny disclaimer by Steve Edge and Jennifer Hennessy.

A real gem that somehow seems to have slipped under the radar. If you are interested in football at any level I am sure you will enjoy this DVD.
