Product Description

Product Description

Technology does not exist in a vacuum. In the same way that a plant needs water and nourishment to grow, technology needs people and process to thrive and succeed. Culture (i.e., people and process) is integral and critical to the success of any new technology deployment or implementation.

Big data is not just a technology phenomenon. It has a cultural dimension. It's vitally important to remember that most people have not considered the immense difference between a world seen through the lens of a traditional relational database system and a world seen through the lens of a Hadoop Distributed File System. This paper broadly describes the cultural challenges that accompany efforts to create and sustain big data initiatives in an evolving world whose data management processes are rooted firmly in traditional data warehouse architectures.

Not very useful. Just a bunch of quotes and opinions of others. Thanks God was free in kindle.
Big Data still seems to me a technology searching for a problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars TOO SHORT 19 Feb 2014

It was good, but I would like to see a more detailed presentation. One that gives more details and goes into more depth of current work in the field.
4.0 out of 5 stars Appreciable overview 2 Feb 2014
By Marcos P Silvestri - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For someone like me who knew all but nothing about Big Data, this book is certainly a nice overview of the main idea, the concepts around the new revolutionary paradigm of storing and handling data, massively, flexibly, intelligently... not only that, but it also explains what, ideally, someone cut out be a Data Scientist needs to have in terms of knowledge and skills. The same way, in a group, the types of abilities its members should possess to succeed in working Big Data.

Overview well presented, clear and right English as I can recall, I just wish the book had covered the subject more in depth.

This book clearly explains what are the challenges accompanying big data initiatives in contrast with traditional data management tools of last few decades.
