Review

‘…explains how to build a structure without over–complicating it… a must for those trying to build an organization that works.’ (Management Today, January 2011). ‘…flawed thinking about the importance of top management talent is brilliantly exposed by Christopher Bones.’ (Director.co.uk, February 2011). “excellent book… It is as telling as it is timely.”   (Director, February 2011). ‘ Bones combines his dry humour with practical advice.’   (HR Magazine, April 2011). ‘… wonderfully forthright book .’    (Peoplemanagement.co.uk, May 2011). ′The Cult of the Leader’ stood out for me, as it is so relevant in the current climate and its analysis of the underlying causes of our current economic issues is the best I have seen.’ (Sir Anthony Cleaver, February 2012) ′A very strong example of a compelling work–related read, with lessons for both the private and public sector′ (Guardian Professional, February 2012)

From the Inside Flap

Modern business is obsessed with leaders. Although everyone is talking about leadership, its real meaning is becoming more and more obscure. Today we define leaders in terms of how they seem, not their judgment and what they are able to do. The result has been the failure of leadership at a time when we need all the good leaders we can find. We now face critical decisions and urgently need to rethink the role of leadership in order to make these choices well. In The Cult of the Leader Chris Bones argues that in order to rebuild trust and confidence, we need to redefine talent, revalue experience and reconsider remuneration. Only by doing this, will we come to a realistic appreciation of what leaders can and can’t do. This is a groundbreaking and highly provocative book.

This book gives a great critique of leadership thinking in society today. The author challenges us to look at what we expect from our leaders, and the dangers of arrogant and egoic leadership. Very timely given the current economic difficulties around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very relevant, very interesting! 16 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
Chris Bones brings something very fresh to leadership theory, and has a very relevant view in these times of corporate greed. I have read a lot of books on leadership, but this one definitely stands out. It's easy to read, very well written, and convincing throughout.
